INTRODUCTION

An ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) is always being considered as panacea for all information needs and bringing efficiencies in enterprises. During 1990’s it became a buzzword and grew at skyrocketing pace. As per an estimate as many as 500 big companies worldwide have implemented ERP during 1995-1999. Earlier this phenomenon was limited only to big organizations but as the ERP market for big enterprises matures ERP giants are now eyeing on to Small & Medium Enterprises (SME). With many affordable solutions available and because of increasing awareness of ERP’s many companies in this segment are planning to implement it. This changing trend is worth noting and taking a note of it most ERP giants have started offering solutions specifically targeted to SME’s.

By contrast, the SMB market will look for products that meet a need with minimal adaptation. Typical weaknesses in this sector confirm the diagnosis. Security is often cited as the major problem. Unfortunately security features are rarely built into products in a way that can be deployed without specialist skills and knowledge.

Many organizations in these sectors are avid consumers of technology. The market is there but only those vendors that are prepared to adapt to its different requirements will make headway.

Many-a-times ERP implementation has been a worst nightmare for many organizations. Cost overruns, incorrect process mapping, problems with BPR (Business Process Reengineering), lack of proper training , low ROI and failure to deliver the true value of investment were some of the problems that organization faces.
