The String Instruments make use of the bow that is made of the hair of horse tail to vibrate the strings. They consist of Erhu, Gaohu, Zhonghu, Dihu, Gehu, Jinghu, Jing Erhu, Sanhu, Sihu, Banhu, Zhuihu, Ma Tou Qin and Ma Gu Qin etc.

For the past thousand years, the art of the string was well developed in the country of China. Old instruments were improvised upon to give birth to newer and better instruments such as Erhu, Jinghu, Banhu and Sihu etc. Gaohu, Zhonghu, Dihu and Gehu were eventually developed to meet the demand of a Chinese Orchestra. They yield a soft, elegant tone. The use of portamento and vibrato can give a feeling of weeping or complaint. Difficult performing techniques are also developed over the years to increase the capability of the string to express its music vividly. Gaohu and Erhu are the outstanding ones among the instruments and are capable of performing in Solos and Concertos.

In the modern Chinese Orchestra, the string occupies a position comparable in importance to the violin in the Western Orchestra.
