The Plucking Section consists of instruments such as Pipa, San Xian, Ruan, Qin, Se, Liuqin, Huo Bu Si, Zheng, Ka Long, Du Xian Qin, Qin Qin, etc. Unlike the String, which uses bow hair to vibrate the strings, Plucking uses pick, or finger nails to pluck the strings. Yangqin, however uses hammer to strike the string. It is categorised as an instrument of the Plucking Section because of its location on stage and its musical effects which are similar to those of Plucking Instruments.
The sound of Plucking Instruments is lively and attractive. Different Plucking Instruments can be gathered together to form a Plucking Ensemble. Popular Works written for it are "Tuo Ling Xiang Ding Dang", "Wo Ba Shi Jie Lai Zhou You", "Xian Zi Wu Qu", etc.
