Many of the places within the Worcestershire and Herefordshire boundaries have strong Elgarian connections and his music has been inextricably linked with this area.
In particular, that area of countryside bounded by the cathedral cities of Worcester, Hereford and Gloucester, and having at its heart the undulating range of the Malvern Hills. Here Elgar was born, walked, cycled, flew kites, and lived for 55 of his 76 years. Here too he died and was buried within sight of those Hills.
Visitors to the area having an interest in Elgar are advised to obtain from any local tourist office a copy of the leaflet 'The Elgar Route' which, in conjunction with a series of road signs, provides an introduction to the geographical links between the composer and his surroundings.
Some of these are included here, but there are also places of interest - perhaps not so well-known - in which the visitor might be interested:
- Lower Broadheath (The Elgar Birthplace Museum)
- Worcester
- The Church of St John Baptist, Claines
- Powick Hospital
- Witley Court
- Great Malvern
- The Malvern Hills
- Hereford
- Mordiford Bridge
- Queenhill Church
- St Wulstan's Chuch, Little Malvern
- Drakes Broughton
