What is a mailing list?

What is a mailing list? A mailing list is a list of people electronically connected that speak through the computer about a particolar subject. Every body that want to send a message to all the subscribers of a list can do it by simply sending a single mail to the list. It will be automatically send to all the subscribers.

What you need...

You don't need much to be a subscriber of CISV-L messages, an e-mail account and some sort of computer with an e-mail client installed will do. You might also want some knowledge on how your e-mail works, so that you can download your messages, and maybe even contribute in the discussions.

What you have to do...

Let's do the subscription process, step by step, together...
  1. Start your e-mail program, and open a new message.
  2. In the 'to'-box write: listserv@maine.maine.edu
  3. Do not write any 'subject'.
  4. In the main body of the message type: SUBSCRIBE CISV-L yourfirstname yourlastname -yourchapter. (Example: SUBSCRIBE CISV-L Doris Allen -Maine)
  5. Send the mail.
  6. After a few minutes, a reply from the server will arrive, so wait for 5 minutes and then download your mail. If there is no mail, just wait some more minutes, then try again.
  7. You will now have to reply to this message, so push the 'reply'-button in your mail program.
  8. Clear everything in the main body of the message, just type in ok
  9. Send this new message.
  10. After another few minutes, two messages will arrive in your mailbox. Read these messages carefully. If you accidentally delete the one containing CISV-L information, please read and download it now.
  11. You are now a subscriber to CISV-L

What you get...

By subscribing to CISV-L messages you will hopefully participate in discussions about CISV, and CISVish topics, and who knows ...maybe you will meet a lost CISV-friend? Please read the intro-letter for information on how to post to CISV-L. The section on Do's and dont's of CISV-L. contains information on what not to post to the list.
