Mummy “Kella”...
A female dog, about three years old, now named "Kella." She resides at the premises of a supermarket and recently has had a litter of pups, which were
all taken away by the employees of the supermarket. She had a transmissible
venereal tumor at the time KACPAW found her.
She was treated for this condition on 10 February 1999 with anticancer drugs at the supermarket premises by a veterinarian from the Department of Veterinary Clinical Studies of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of the University of Peradeniya. Ten days after treatment
she was cured of her tumor and was brought to the Faculty and spayed on 24
February 1999. She was looked after at the Faculty. After the stitches were removed, she was bathed and given the ARV and taken back to the supermarket. A collar was put on her with a plastic tag with the KACPAW logo bearing the words "STERILIZED" and "ARV GIVEN." She is the first case to be funded by KACPAW (cost Rs.1000).
The management of the supermarket will look after her and keep her for their security. She is loved by the security personnel who say she is a great asset.
P.S. Of two other female animals, about the same age, living at the supermarket premises, one has been spayed and vaccinated. She, now named "Browny," was treated for a chronic cough. Browny joined Kella at the supermarket as part of the "canine security service." The other is suffering from a transmissible venereal tumor. She will be treated for this condition and later spayed and immunized. The management has undertaken to look after all three animals
