PRESIDENT'S PODIUM

    April Message

 Hello, Pioneers!

April is upon us and with it many new years have begun in Japan.  New school years and new fiscal years.

We have lost a few members  recently and we will see a couple more leave shortly. But letus on the other hand consider how many new people move to Sapporo in April--how many potential new Toastmasters!

One of our responsibilities as Toastmasters is to find some of these people and introduce our club to them. Once they have come, we must also make every effort to make them feel welcome and show them the benefits of joining the Sapporo
Pioneers TMC.

Turnover of Club members is  natural.  With everyone's cooperation and efforts our club will grow and thrive.

            - TM Steve Fylypchuk

WHAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING LATELY . . .

Report of 08 April Meeting

CTM Shinohara came all the way from Fukuoka to join us and deliver his last speech as a club member.  In addition, we had two charming guests: Ms. Kiri Yanagida and Ms. Reiko Nakai.

TM Andou helped the meeting set sail, delivering the Opening Thought.  She quoted a story from Willium Shakespeare about fairies luring people into asleep.  Are you struggling to get up in the spring season?  Yes!  I always see the fairies luring me into sleep, said TM Andou.

In the Table Topics session, TM Higuchi asked a hypothetical question to each member.  Members answered by using their imaginations.

In the Current Topics session, TM Firkola lead a discussion entitled " Causes of increasing violent behavior in Japanese youth" It was an active session and there were a variety of insightful opinions.

Next, speaker TM Davis gave an encouraging speech to develop our club.  He quoted Eleanor  Roosevelt: "You must do what you think you cannot do". He advised members to grow by taking risks and learning from mistakes.

Finally, CTM Shinohara  gave us his farewell speech.  He compared the club to a tool.  He advised us to utilize the club system as much as possible.  Sayonara, TM Shinohara.  We are looking forward seeing you again.

Spring is the season to seize the moment and join Toastmasters. Pleaase bring your guests!

Farewell, Mr. SHINOHARA

Mr. Shinohara gave his last speech as a Club member on 08 April.  He will return to his family and begin a new career in his hometown of Fukuoka.

Mr. Shinohara, we are sorry to see you go!  We appreciate the Club you founded and nurtured for all of us Pioneers.  Pioneers can maintain contact with you via Fukuoka Toastmasters Club.  Mr. Shinohara, "Happy Trails" for your new career and life in Fukuoka!

CLUB HANDBOOK: TIMER

When you play Timer, you keep the meeting on schedule.

For Toastmasters, one of the lessons to be practiced in speech training is that of expressing a thought within a specific time.

At the meeting, the Toastmaster of the evening will ask you to explain the timing rules. Demonstrate how you will use the timing device. Timer's tools include a box with three lights (traffic lights) and a stopwatch.

How to Time Table Topics

Each speaker should speak for between 1 and 2 minutes, with 30 seconds overtime available:

     green light at 1 minute
yellow light at 1 1/2 min
     red light at 2 minutes

How to Time Other Speakers

Ask each speaker before his or her speech: how long is your speech?  Ensure that you know how long the speech should take. Speech timer's rule of thumb:

   green when 2 min remain
   yellow when 1 min remains
   red when time is up

How long should speeches be?

     Most Speakers (5-7 min)
     Speech Evaluators (3 min)
     Grammarian (3 min)
     General Evaluator (7 min)

Near the end of the meeting, the General Evaluator will ask you for a timers report.  Give the time requested and the time used by each speaker.  List the table topics speakers and evaluators with their times.  Finally, let the participants know where the meeting  fell off schedule.
