KEY SCRIPTURES:
Those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
(Romans 8:14)
|
A.
How do we humble ourselves before God?
If we want
to be humble before God, we must always possess these various attitudes:
 |
Acknowledge with our lips our total dependence
on God before man |
 |
Submit to his Word; |
 |
Turn to Him in praying and fasting; |
 |
Follow the leading of the Holy Spirit; |
 |
Give Him all the glory for all He has done. |
B.

2)
C.
Submission to the Word of God (Lesson
3)
D.
Turn to God for all our needs in prayer and fasting (Lesson
4)
E.
Be totally dependent on the Holy Spirit - Section 1
If we want to humble ourselves before God, telling God
we are totally dependent on Him, then we must also learn to be totally
dependent on the Holy Spirit.
God does not want us to live by trusting in our own
strength, or in the might of other men.
He wants us to trust in the power of the Holy Spirit.
"Not by might nor by power, but by my
Spirit," says the LORD Almighty.
(Zechariah 4:6)
1.
The coming of the Holy Spirit into the life of a believer
God the Father and God the Son has sent the Holy
Spirit from heaven to help us live the victorious life as sons of God.
Exalted to the right hand of God, He (Jesus) has
received from the Father the promised HOLY SPIRIT and has poured out
what you now see and hear.
(Acts 2:33)
The Holy Spirit now lives in every believer who has
believed in Jesus and has been baptized in water, and who has asked
the Holy Spirit to fill him.
This was the promise given by Peter to the Jews in Jerusalem who
wanted to be saved.
Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized,
every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may
be forgiven. And YOU WILL RECEIVE the gift of the HOLY SPIRIT.
(Acts 2:38)
2.
How do we receive the fullness of Holy Spirit?
The six
steps that must be followed before we can receive and manifest the
fullness of the Holy Spirit are as follow:
 |
Repent and turn to Jesus |
 |
Be baptized |
 |
Be thirsty |
 |
Ask God |
 |
Receive by faith with thanksgiving - Drink of
the Holy Spirit |
 |
Obey the Holy Spirit - His fullness (power and
love) will only be manifested as we obey Him. |
(a)
Repent and turn to Jesus
We must repent, that is, turn away from the life of
sin and turn to Jesus for His salvation, for the forgiveness of our
sins, for His righteousness, for His power, for His love, and for His
Holy Spirit.
Peter replied, "REPENT and be baptized,
every one of you, in the name of JESUS CHRIST so that your sins may
be forgiven. And YOU WILL RECEIVE the gift of the HOLY SPIRIT.
(Acts 2:38)
Through the work of Jesus on the cross, we can now
receive the Holy Spirit, as a deposit guaranteeing our New Covenant
with God.
It is only through Jesus that we can receive the Holy Spirit.
And you also were included in CHRIST when you
heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having
believed, you were marked in HIM with a seal, the promised HOLY
SPIRIT, who is a deposit in guaranteeing our inheritance until the
redemption of those who are God's possession - to the praise of His
glory
(Ephesians 1:13-14)
On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus
stood and said in a loud voice, "If a man is thirsty, let him
COME TO ME and drink. Whoever BELIEVES IN ME, as the Scripture has
said, streams of living water will flow from within him." By
this He meant the SPIRIT, whom those who BELIEVED IN HIM WERE LATER
TO RECEIVE. Up to that time the SPIRIT had not been given, since
Jesus had not yet been glorified.
(John 7:37-39)
(b)
Be baptized
Jesus declared that "Whoever believes and is
baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be
condemned" (Mark 16:16). A person who
truly believes in Jesus as Savior will declare it publicly and immediately
by undergoing water baptism (Acts 2:38-41; 8:9-13,
34-39; 9:18-19; 10:44-48; 16:19-33). A person who claims to
believe in Jesus but does not want to be baptized either is not
sincere in his belief or is confused about what believing in Jesus
really is.
Peter replied, "Repent and be BAPTIZED,
every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may
be forgiven. And YOU WILL RECEIVE the gift of the HOLY SPIRIT.
(Acts 2:38)
(c)
Be thirsty
In order to receive the filling of the Holy Spirit, we
must have a great hunger and thirst for Him. We must desire His
presence with our whole heart.
We must never be indifferent and say with false humility: "If the
Holy Spirit wants to fill me, He will come and do it."
The Holy Spirit is a Gentleman.
He will never enter into your life without your sincere invitation.
He will never fill you if you do not sincerely hunger and thirst
for Him.
On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus
stood and said in a loud voice, 'If a man is THIRSTY, let him come
to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said,
streams of living water will flow from within him." By this He
meant the SPIRIT, whom those who believed in Him were later to
receive. Up to that time the SPIRIT had not been given, since Jesus
had not yet been glorified.
(John 7:37-39)
(d)
Ask God the Father
Our Lord Jesus as promised us that God our Father will
give good gifts to us, including the gift of the Holy Spirit, when we
ask Him. We are commanded to ask God for the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a
fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will
give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to
give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in
heaven give the HOLY SPIRIT to those who ASK Him!
(Luke 11:11-13; Matthew 7:9-11)
(Those who have never asked God to fill them
with His Holy Spirit can do so at any time, even right now, if they
have a hunger and thirst after the life of the Holy Spirit. They can
use the Prayer at the end of this Lesson as a guide.)
(e)
Receive the Holy Spirit by faith with thanksgiving - Drinking of the
Holy Spirit
After we have asked God to fill us with the Holy
Spirit, we must believe that we have received what we asked for (Mark
11:24).
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in
prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
(Mark 11:24)
By faith we are to thank God for filling us with His
Holy Spirit.
We are to believe in the promise of Jesus in Mark 11:24 that we
have received immediately what we asked for, and not depend on any
signs or feelings, for we "walk by faith, not by sight" (2
Corinthians 5:7).
As we receive the Holy Spirit by faith, we are drinking
of the Spirit.
As we begin to believe that the Holy Spirit has come into our life and
has filled us, and thank God for His Spirit, the Holy Spirit will
manifest His presence in our life.
(f)
Obey the Holy Spirit
The fullness of the Holy Spirit which we have received
by faith will only begin to manifest in our life when we obey the Holy
Spirit every moment of our life.
As we walk in obedience to the leading of the Holy
Spirit, the love and power of the Holy Spirit will begin to be seen in
our life and ministry.
Rivers of living water (the love and power of the Holy Spirit) will
flow from within us to bless others.
Thus we obey the Holy Spirit and:
 |
preach the Good News to unbelievers, the
Holy Spirit will confirm His word with signs and wonders
following (Mark 16:17-20);
 |
demons will be driven out (Matthew
12:28; John 14:11-12; Mark 11:17; Matthew 10:11; 28:20); |
 |
the sick will be healed (Matthew
10:1; 28:20; Luke 10:8; Mark 16:18); and |
 |
sinners will be convicted of sin,
righteousness and judgment (John
16:8-11; Acts 2:37-41 );
|
|
 |
serve the Lord and minister to others in need,
we will begin to receive and be a channel for the gifts of the
Holy Spirit, including:
 |
the word of wisdom, |
 |
the word of knowledge, |
 |
faith, |
 |
healings, |
 |
working of miracles, |
 |
prophecy, |
 |
discerning of spirits, |
 |
tongues and |
 |
interpretation of tongues (1
Corinthians 12:7-10).
|
|
 |
obey the commands of the Lord and walk in
love towards others, rejoicing at all times, the fruit of
the Holy Spirit will begin manifest in our lives and touch and
bless others around us (Romans 5:5; 14:17;
John 7:37-39; Galatians 5:16-26).
|
 |
Receiving the filling of the Holy Spirit in
our lives in order to allow the love and power of God to
manifest in our lives so that we can bear witness to Jesus is
also called the BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT by our Lord Jesus
Himself and by John the Baptist (Matthew 3:11;
Mark 1:4-8; Luke 3:16; John 1:32-33; 7:37-39; Acts 1:5-8). |
The BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT is a blessing to be
received by EVERY child of God by a SIMPLE act of faith. Do not let
men complicate this simple act for you by their rules, rituals and
regulations, and so deprive you of the power of the Holy Spirit from
manifesting in your life. Just follow the six simple steps listed
above in this section and the life of victory through the Holy Spirit
is yours.
3.
How we know a person is filled with the Holy Spirit
When the
Holy Spirit fills us, each of us becomes a temple of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit helps us to glorify Jesus is our lives.
Do you not know that your body is a TEMPLE of the
HOLY SPIRIT, who is in you, whom you have received from God.
(1 Corinthians 6:19)
But when He, the SPIRIT OF TRUTH, comes, He will
guide you into all truth. He will BRING GLORY TO ME by taking from
what is mine and making it known to you.
(John 16:13-14)
If a believer can say "Jesus is Lord," then
he is glorifying Jesus by the help of the Holy Spirit, and this is a
sign (an evidence) that he is filled with the Holy Spirit.
Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking
by the SPIRIT OF GOD says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one
can say, "JESUS IS LORD," except by the HOLY SPIRIT.
(1 Corinthians 12:3)
4.
God commands us to follow after the Spirit, and no longer after the
flesh
As sons of
God, we are to be led and empowered by the Holy Spirit in all that we
think, do or say.
We are no longer to be led by the flesh, by our old nature.
We are to follow after the Holy Spirit.
So I say, live by the SPIRIT, and you will not
gratify the desires of the sinful nature (the flesh). For the sinful
nature (the flesh) desires what is contrary to the SPIRIT and the
SPIRIT what is contrary to the sinful nature (the flesh).
But if you are led by the SPIRIT, you are not under law.
(Galatians 5:16-18)
Those who live according to the sinful nature
(the flesh) have their minds set on what that nature desires; but
those who live in accordance with the SPIRIT have their minds set on
what the SPIRIT desires.
(Romans 8:5)
5.
Following after the Spirit brings life; living by the flesh brings
death.
As we
totally depend on the leading, the power and the love of the Holy
Spirit, the life of God flows into us and through us.
In this way, we can always demonstrate and share the life of God with
others.
For if you live according to the sinful nature
(the flesh), you will DIE; but if by the Spirit you put to death the
misdeeds of the body, you will LIVE.
(Romans 8:13)
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those
who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the
SPIRIT OF LIFE set me free from the law of sin and DEATH.
(Romans 8:1-2)
6.
Not depending on the Spirit will grieve the Spirit
If we do
not depend on the love, power and leading of the Holy Spirit to help
us, and instead live our lives as we please, then we will grieve the
Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is made sad by our wrong attitude, and the Holy Spirit
is not able to help us in any way.
And do not GRIEVE the HOLY SPIRIT OF GOD, with
whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all
bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every
form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving
one another, just as it Christ God forgave you.
(Ephesians 4:30-32)
The Holy Spirit will never manifest His love and power
to heal, to set free, to protect, to lead, to guide, to deliver, if we
are not living in accordance with the Word of God, even though we may
be doing "Christian ministry."
The Holy Spirit will only confirm the Word of God if we are acting in
accordance with God's Word (Mark 16:20).
The Holy Spirit will only agree with God's Word and not with man's
plans, desires and wishes, no matter how sincere or how religious (1
John 5:7).
