Dir en grey was formed in February 1997. It was til' 1998 that they became popular.
Most of the members were ex-La:Sadies except Toshiya who came from D+L and GOSICK!!!
In August 1998, their single "I'll" broke sales record & had reached in number 7 in the Oricon chart in Japan. Soon, X-Japan's previous member, Yoshiki, noticed them. He began to help them with 3 major singles that was produced by him.
