1. PETER¹ MALLETT was the ancesteral father of the Hawkins County, Hancock County, Bradley County, and Hamilton County, TN Malletts. Not much is known about Peter Mallett, but it is believed that he was a Melungeon. He was probably born in North Carolina between 1780 and 1790. Peter Mallett appears to have been in Warren County, TN in 1791 where he was bound by the Court as an orphaned child to Lewis Patrick until the age of 21 to learn the ways of a planter. He was living in Wilkes County, NC in 1820, and was enumerated as a "Free Colored Person". Peter Mallett arrived in Hawkins County, TN between 1820 and 1830. Peter was never enumerated in Hawkins County, TN as colored, although some of his descendents were listed as Mulatto in the census of 1850, 1860 and 1870.

In the 1830 Census for Hawkins County, TN Census, Peter Mallett's age was listed as 50-60, and he had two boys 5-10, 2 girls under 5, 1 girl 5-10, 1 girl 10-15, and l woman 30-40 living with him. The first name of his wife is known because she is found in the 1850 Claiborne County, TN Census. In the 1840 Hawkins County, TN Census, Peter Mallett's age was listed as 50-60, and he had 1 boy 15-20, and 2 girls 10-15, and 1 woman 40-50 living with him. Peter Mallett was not enumerated in the 1850 Hawkins County, TN Census, and he is presumed to have died in the 1840's in Hawkins County, TN. There were two male Malletts mentioned in the Hawkins County, TN records between 1840 and 1863. These are William Jefferson Mallett and Levi Mallett. These two men are presumed be the two boys 5-10 years old listed in the 1830 Census.

Peter Mallett married ELIZABETH UNKNOWN about 1815 in Wilkes County, NC. Elizabeth was born about 1790 in NC.
