    Q & A ABOUT SOUND OF MUSIC (Updated: 12.26.03)

Q: You know the bag Maria was carrying during the 'I Have Confidence' scene seems vaguely familiar. It looks like the one Julie Andrews used in Mary Poppins (which was the role she played right before the Sound of Music). Well, is it? This question has been in my mind forever. - asked by Katee

A: The bag Julie Andrews used in Mary Poppins is totally different from the one in The Sound of Music. Here are some images to prove it:

The shot on the left is from Mary Poppins when she was about to enter the children's nursery and the one on the right is from The Sound of Music during the 'I Have Confidence' scene. I think the screenshots speak for themselves ~.^

Q: In the gazebo scene where the Captain says something like: I loved you since you sat on that silly pinecone. How did he know she sat on a pinecone instead of something else? - asked by Devin

    SOMites' Answer:

Julie: hmh maybe he found the pinecone after dinner? I mean..how did Maria or any of the children take away the pinecone? Maybe they had no chance to do it without the captain noticing it right after dinner and so had to leave it on the chair to maybe get it later. and in between this the captain took a look at the chair who gave his governess ... such a shock. Or whatever.

Sherina: That was my theory, too, Julie, and what I figured I'd put in my Captain's POV fanfic...it just makes sense to me...that or he'd seen the kids pull that stunt on other governesses! *shrug*

Lindi: I think the Captain knew it was a pinecone when she sat on it... Because he's used to the children making tricks on the governesses. You see that smile he has on his face, after Maria is screaming up from the chair. And that's not a scream of rheumatism if you ask me.. But that's my opinion ;)

Emilyn: I think he saw the children place it there and probably figured it was harmless enough. 0 :-) I think when he heard her scream in the hall earlier it he knew about the frog too.... Another point about the pinecone I think he was kind of aggravated by her defiance and thought if she fell victim to the children's jokes again she would see things more his way. I think he always thought this would be a good test for her.

Q: How did Liesl know how to sing "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" when she doesn't know how to sing yet? - asked by Laiyen

A: That's a tough one, hmm . . . I think Liesl and Rolfe are only talking--in a form of singing since it's a musical. I bet they don't even know they are singing! ^.^

Anyway, if we dig deeper, since Liesl is the oldest among the siblings, she probably heard her parents sing earlier on before her mother died. Did you recall the scene where Maria and the children persuade the captain to play the guitar? Maria said, "I were told you were quite good." then he said, "But that was very (7X) long time ago." then Liesl said, "I remembered father."

Also, when Maria asked the children to think of a song for the baroness, Liesl DIDN'T say she can't sing. If I remember correctly; Friedrich said they didn't know any songs, then Louisa spoke for every one that they didn't even know how to sing, and then Brigitta second it with a no. Liesl probably didn't want Maria to know it yet, or maybe she was just shy...or...you tell me! I need some second opinions about this people.

Q: In the song "Lonely Goatherd", do you know what table d'hote means? -asked by Xia Mei

A: Well, table d'hote is a French term meaning: a full-course meal, such as you might get in a fancy restaurant. If you order table d'hote, you typically get an appetizer, a soup course, a main course and dessert! You can also choose from at least two or three options for each of those.

    source: Table d'hote

+ info. from notafish: Well, I am French, so I guess this one is easy ;-). The definition given is ok, but although Table d'hôte today means a fancy dinner, I believe the primary meaning is more one of a country-type dinner. You'd find table d'hôte in remote villages where there is not enough passage for a restaurant, and usually it is part of a 'bed & breakfast' type setting, offering home cooked meals, prepared by the owner (the host = hôte) to those who wish, usually displaying local dishes. It does convey a meaning of excellent food, but not necessarily "fancy" as such, especially in the times where the movie is set.

Q: Is Christopher Plummer's singing voice dubbed or not?

A: Christopher Plummer was given the option to retape his singing after the film was wrapped. Having worked with a vocal coach throughout the filming, there was hope that he could pull it off. After listening to three songs, Plummer and the others felt that despite obvious improvement, his voice did not match the musical quality of the picture. Voice double Bill Lee was hired on October 1 to dub Plummer's singing in the film.

Q: I thought the children didn't know how to sing. How come Liesl knows how to sing "Edelweiss"?

A: Well, by that time, Maria already taught the children how to sing. And as you see in the movie, the captain sings first, then Liesl just follow him through the second time.

Q: The captain needs a governess to handle his seven children. Why don't these children ever go to school?

A: The von Trapp children DO go to school. As the captain said, "I would not permit them to dream away their summer holidays..." meaning they're on summer vacation. Another scene that proves this when Liesl said "I'll be glad when school begins." when she was talking to Maria after she returned from the abbey.

Q: What does the captain do, except fooling around with the Baroness, to support his family and large property?

A: In my opinion, the von Trapps are rich (Max will even agree with me). Though the captain is retired from the navy, surely he got money out of his retirement and has a saving tucked out some where...I'll appreciate any insights on this one.

notafish says: Well, according to this source, the captain's former wife was quite rich and left him off with a considerable estate. He himself came from quite an alright family as well. So I guess that explains his *not doing anything*.

Q: Did Mother Abbes said "several" or "seven"? If she said 'seven', wouldn't Gretl, which is only five years old, be non-existent?

A: According to the script, Mother Abbes did said 'several', "...his wife died several years ago leaving him alone with the children...", She just said it a bit faster in the movie and kinda mumbled on the 'several' part. Also, I think the writers wouldn't make such mistake.

Q: In the song "Sixteen Going On Seventeen", "...timid and shy and scared are you of things beyond your ken", shouldn't it say 'care' intstead of 'ken'?

A: No, according to my sources, it did say "ken".

note: ken (ken) n. reach, knowledge, grasp, understanding, range. read more terms.
