Do you know why Maria is wearing that wreath on her head during the wedding scene? No, it's not for decoration purposes. ^.^ The wreath actually symbolizes the bride's virginity.

When Charmian Carr got the part of Liesl, she signed in for a seven year contract with the company. After she was done with The Sound of Music, they weren't using her for any projects. Director Robert Wise was even preventing her from making anything because he said that it would ruin the image of Liesl and he didn't want that to happen. Julie Andrews helped her by hooking her up with her agent and ultimately getting her out of the contract. Carr soon stopped acting anyway so she could start a family.
- There is a place in Salzburg called Mad Ludwigs Citadel, which was the birthplace of Mozart. Kym Karath (Gretl) and 5 other kids went to the citadel for a trip where a certain meeting was also taking place. The guy who runs the place was 'crazy' and squirts water under people sits so when they got up to leave, their 'behinds' were soaked. Though they think it was not funny, Kym Karath thought it was hilarious.
-
Angela Cartwright (Brigitta) had to miss the final episode of Make Room For Daddy to begin rehearsals for The Sound of Music.
-
Georg is really George in German (a note from Katie: I just thought it might be interesting if someone didn't know that)
-
Heather Menzies (Louisa) had no acting experience when she was hired for the Sound of Music movie. She was in a local amateur ballet television show and was originally going to be a dancer. But when she tried out for the Sound of Music, she was cast in to the part of Louisa right away.
-
"Sixteen Going on Seventeen" and "Something Good" were shot in daylight because it would be too expensive to shoot it at night. They copied the Gazebo, rebuilt it in a sound stage in Austria, and used a dark colored slide after it was shot to make it look darker.
-
Angela Cartwright (Brigitta) knows the whole script and could recite it without stopping.
-
When they were shooting the scene where Rolfe is throwing pebbles at the window, the maid that lived there yelled, "Vat do you vant!?", so they had to start all over again.
-
Ever since Charmian Carr (Liesl) went to Salzburg, her favorite food has been dark chocolate with almonds.

- Daniel Truhitte was originally turned down for the role of Rolfe because he has brown hair. He got the role after his agent called, asking for another shot, and he wowed producers with his rendition of "Sixteen Going On Seventeen".

|
- Kym Karath (Gretl) swallowed too much water upon falling off the row boat, and threw up on Heather Menzies (Louisa).
- During the scene where Maria and the captain were at the gazebo, Julie Andrews couldn't stop laughing at the absurdity of singing so closely to someone else's face. So after more than 20 takes, the scene was altered to silhouette the two and hide Andrews' giggles.
| -
The reason why Yul Brynner didn't get the part of the captain is because he had a different accent. Director Robert Wise thought it wouldn't give the same effect as Christopher Plummer. Brynner was dying to do it though, but Wise wanted Plummer for the part.
-
Angela Cartwright (Brigitta) and Heather Menzies (Louisa) were obsessed with the Beatles. They would listen to their songs all the time. They had a chance to see them once but coudn't because they had an early shoot the next day, so they were extremely disappointed. Another person Angela and Heather had a crush on was Dan Truhitte (Rolfe). They never told him and eventually got over him. But they still have a crush on Paul McCartney to this day.
-
Anna Lee (Sister Margaretta) originally wanted to audition for the part of the baroness. But Director Robert Wise wanted her to try out for Sister Margaretta. She said that she sang slightly off the key and didn't really want to sing. But Bob Wise said that he didn't want a professional singer and she would be perfect for the part of Sister Margaretta and she did end up getting it.
-
One of the only scenes they had to do one take on was the scene where Maria is waiting to go into the reverend mother's office.
-
Betty Levin (Script Supervisor) and Saul Chaplin (Co-Producer) fell in love during the making of the Sound of Music and got married a few years afterwards. Their relationship was still going as strong as ever even when Saul was sick. Actually, Betty loved taking care of him and was extremely sad and miserable when he died.
-
Of all the adults, Charmian Carr (Liesl) got to know Christopher Plummer the best.
-
The children got along fabulously from day one and behaved pretty good together, usually.
They did get into some mischief though. They would play tricks on hotel guests and on other people. One night, led by Nicholas Hammond (Friedrich), they switched all of the shoes some guests put outside their door to be shined. They switched them with other people's shoes all over the hotel, so when people woke up they didn't have any of the right shoes. Another thing they did was they would get toilet paper and tissue chunks and threw them down at people walking on the street. Finally, people started complaining and the children were asked to leave. Director Bob Wise sat them down and told them that they had to calm down a little and the hotel will allow them to stay as long as they won't pull any more tricks.
-
Charmian Carr's (Liesl) last name was originally Farnon. Robert Wise thought it was too much of a tongue twister and asked her to change it into one syllable. He gave her a list to choose from and she allowed him to change it into Carr. After a while, her little sister Darleen, took that as her last name too.
-
Julie and the children spent full three weeks just rehearsing the Lonely Goatherd scene.
-
Kym Karath's (Gretl) favorite costume was the nightgown because it was so comfortable. She also loved the way all of the costumes looked and felt because were made from the most beautiful fabrics. She even made a drawing of all the costumes she wore in Salzburg and still has them.
-
The only scenes shot at the Nonnberg Abbey were the ones where the children come to look for Maria and when the Nazis are looking for the von Trapps. They were only allowed to shoot from the outside because the church was so old, so they weren't allowed inside.
-
Julie Andrews said she never felt more beautiful when she wore the wedding gown. Not before or since.
-
During the boat scene, there were people under the boat making it rock so Maria and the children would fall over. Even after falling into the dirty murky lake, they still had to be sprayed a lot to really get the effect of being soaked. Liesl was also sprayed before the scene where she comes to Maria's room after the Sixteen Going On Seventeen scene. She was also sprayed with brown stuff so she would look muddy and dirty from climbing up the house.
