Who can receive a volunteer visitor?

A person with a physical disability or long term illness and is housebound and

  • Is socially isolated and

  • Is over 19 years old and

  • Goes out once or less per week (other than medical appointments) AND receives one visit or less per week from a friend, visitor or relative and

  • Actively would like a volunteer visitor

What is the role of the volunteer?

The volunteer is there essentially to provide companionship. They may be able to assist a disabled person get out of the house to do some shopping or visit the park. In the home, volunteer and client have a good chat over a cup of tea, and might share activities such as reading aloud, jigsaws or a mutual hobby. Some volunteers help their clients with their correspondence. Sometimes a visit from a volunteer means that a family member or friend who is the carer can attend to something for themselves . Volunteers do NOT provide hands on care or do the weekly shopping or cleaning. They supplement the services that should be provided by the statutory agencies such as Social Services , and do the things that care services cannot assist with.

How do I know they are a responsible person?

The Scheme requires all potential volunteers to register with us, provide us with referees (whom we contact independently), undertake a one day induction course, and we undertake a criminal records check. Volunteers are also monitored and supervised throughout their time with us. In nearly ten years, we have never had any problems with illegal behaviour!

When do visits take place?

Any time that is mutually convenient for client and volunteer. Some people meet at the same time each week, but others are arranged on a week by week basis.

How long are the visits?

Most visits last an hour or two but this may vary according to the clients needs and the time the volunteer has available.

How do I apply?

Anyone can refer themselves to the Scheme. Referrals are also accepted from Social Services, health and social organisations, voluntary groups, family or friends. The first step is to telephone for an initial chat with the Scheme Organisers on 020-8832-7422 or you can just send us an e-mail right now.

Great attention is taken in matching volunteers to clients in order to foster a friendly relationship from the outset. As soon as we think we may have a suitable volunteer the Scheme Organisers will then arrange an appointment for an informal interview at the applicants home. If you meet the Scheme criteria, then you will be introduced to a volunteer by the Organisers.

Will it cost anything?

No, clients are not charged for the service. Volunteers' out of pocket expenses are paid by the Scheme. Administration costs are paid for by charitable fundraising. If a client desires, donations or even legacies can be made to the Scheme but this is certainly not expected.

If you are still in any doubt, have a look at What people say about Us and give us a call or e-mail us to chat it through!
