WAGES
The local economy hardly sustains local people. Opportunities are rare and the pay is bad.
A few for people who want to work with aid organizations, but it sounds like those opportunities are drying up. Teachers might find work at the expat schools, but the pay is unimpressive.
Terrible.

ENTERTAINMENT
As much as you like. Join the International Women's Club and you'll never be lonely.
Serbs love to entertain. Expats have their get togethers. Lots of dining out.
About as much as you care to have.
Some, not much.

RELIGION

Yes, or so I hear. The info sheets report a number of different denominations.

COMMUNITY
There are fewer than 1000 Americans. There are many diplomatic and other different license plates on cars.
I'd estimate 3000-4000 and growing. International agencies have been crowding in since the fall of Milosevic. Not too many investors yet, but give it some time.

DRESS
Serbians are sharp dressers, if they can afford it. Don't wear your jogging pants for shopping. Work dress is about as formal as in the US.
Suit and tie for men. Dresses and pant suits for women. Serbs like to dress well for going out and other functions. For American men, jeans and a college sweatshirt should be reserved for home or game night at the neighbor's house.
Similar to US. Serbs are snappy dressers when they can afford to be.
Dresses for street walking. - Order your summers suit. Because is big rush we will execute customers in strict rotation. -Drop your trousers here for best results. -Ladies may have a fit upstairs.(http://bluemonkeyjammies.blogspot.com/)-These were some signs and notices written in English!

HEALTH

Belgrade isn't unhealthy living, although I wished one could buy organic food, especially for my son. Medical care isn't so hot. If you're not a State Department person and have to take care of these matters yourself, choose private clinics (Belmedic is a good one). Doctors are often very good, whereas equipment and technology are below standard. Private clinics have to be paid on the spot, but are affordable for non-Serbians.Treatments in hospitals should be avoided, if only for the different take on treating a patient. Sometimes, they don't allow visitors. Fathers are not allowed in the birth room. No rooming-in for babies and new mothers. Standards of hygiene are very different.Medications are available on a limited basis although there are pharmacies galore in Belgrade. Some prescriptions aren't readily available and can't be ordered as simply as in the US or in Germany. Bring all your important medications and things like cold medicine, cough syrup, etc. (Especially when you have kids since kid's meds are even harder to come by.) Pharmacies also carry diapers and wipes - the Serbian brand is horrible but Pampers are everywhere.

Fairly healthy. The U.S. Embassy is getting a doctor soon. In lieu of the doctor, there are a few local doctors who are on the Embassy phone list. Any medical condition low-middling to serious will get you evacuated to Vienna or London. Root canals will get you an evacuation, but the local dentists do a good job for CHEAP.
Local medical care is still recovering from war, sanctions, and enforced poverty. Very broadly speaking, the personnel are competent but equipment, drugs, etc. may be low quality or simply lacking. If you have medical issues, call ahead and do your homework.
Nurse.

PETCARE
Serbs love pets, but they think it is inhumane to spay or neuter. Thus, packs of wild dogs roam the streets and neighborhoods. Quite a few expats have their dogs, cats, and other creatures. There are a couple local vets who have cornered the American embassy market.
I'm told it is available. "The care is not pretty, but it is as good as in the States. Liberal use of Clorox keeps vet clinics clean."
Yes. The Embassy operator can connect you with a great vet and there are others listed. The care is not pretty, but it is as good as in the States. Vet clinics are old, but are sterile (liberal use of Clorox).

MORALE
Pretty upbeat on the whole. Dealing with Serbian bureaucracy can be frustrating, but there is an air of renewal that makes living here very pleasant.
Good to great. The look and smell of Belgrade can be depressing, but the Serbs are a fairly nice group of people. The expats I know have a good time, and if they get a little stir-crazy it's not that far to lots of interesting and fun places.
High. Serbia is no longer a hardship post. Belgrade is safer than many US cities, quite cheap to live in, and very pleasant if you don't mind the low air quality and general dinginess. The people are mostly friendly, the country has just ditched a really unpleasant dictator and replaced him with a (by Balkan standards) pretty decent democratic government, and if you want a weekend away you can be in Vienna or Zurich in an hour. What's not to like?

LEAVING BEHIND
Snappy big three-wheeled baby stroller. Get a small one because shop entries are narrow, aisles in supermarkets are very narrow and the sidewalks are often turned into parking lots, so that you have to maneuver around cars all the time.
Bicycle: I will attempt to ride in the city, but it looks like it will be a foolhardy enterprise. Even the sidewalks are dangerous because of random metal objects and parked cars. Most of your staple groceries, except for Mexican food. Notions that the Serbs hate Americans. Coffee items: the Serbs love both their odd muck-bottomed coffee and fabulous, golden-frothed espresso.

DON'T FORGET
Spices. Laptop.
Mexican food items. Kitty litter. Pecans. Hand sanitizer.
