AFTER-HOURS
Movies - they are playing in the original language, so English and American movies are no problem. They arrive late, though, three and more months after the release in the States. Nightclubs abound, some good jazz bars and that e.g. the German Goethe Insitute organizes movies, theatre shows and exhibitions on a regular basis.
Lots of Belgrade is non-stop, except for Sunday. Cafes, clubs, bars, and discos are common. Care should be exercised, as some of these places might be watering holes for local mafia types.

FAST FOOD
McDonalds is all over town. I just ate there today. It ran me about 4 bucks. Menu combos will run you US$3 to 4. That's the only franchise in town. Local kiosks sell great grilled items like chicken sandwiches. Serbians love to grill meet and eat on the go.
McDonalds, pizza delivery. No Pizza Hut, Starbucks, or other major chains -- yet.About 3/4 of the US price.
McDonalds. Not expensive.

RESTAURANTS
Quite a few in the meantime. Serbian cuisine is almost entirely meat dishes. The "Resava" on Krunska Street and the "Kosava" on Kralja Petra serve good Italian cuisine (the latter deserves a price for very quick and friendly service, too!). Right next door to the Kosava is a fancier Italian/French restaurant which is worth a visit or two or three. There's a good Lebanese restaurant off MacKenzieva street. Scadarlia street has plenty and nice restaurants… Just go out and try!
Yes. Just about any restaurant will serve a great pepper steak. Local dishes are heavy on the meat, but there are still lost of great vegetables and salads. There are lots of Italian restaurants. Indian and Chinese are also represented.
Okay, some good, not great. Service tends to be slow, though this is partly a cultural thing. A restaurant meal is expected to be leisurely and last at least a couple of hours. There are no quick-meal diners or anything like them. As to the food, vegetarians beware -- eating out, for Serbs, means meat and lots of it. Also, Serbs are heavyish drinkers, though falling well short of Russians.
Special cocktails for the ladies with nuts. - Our wines leave you nothing to hope for. -Salad a firm's own make; limpid red beet soup with cheesy dumplings in the form of a finger; roasted duck let loose; beef rashers beaten up in the country people's fashion.  -Ladies are requested not to have children in the bar. (http://bluemonkeyjammies.blogspot.com/)-These were some signs and notices written in English!

FOOD

There are two big supermarkets in Novi Beograd which carry just about everything you want. For your daily shopping, supermarkets are abundant in the city. However, the selection varies daily - Special K today doesn't mean Special K tomorrow. Sometimes, the entire city seems wiped of certain products. If you have favorites and find them in a supermarket, buy a stack, just to be sure. Frozen goods often suffer from bad storage. If you can't find a particular item, go to a big green market.

Green markets are wonderful and overflow with local farm produce and other products, ranging from imported Hungarian ham over toilet paper and light bulbs to children's toys and bras. In the winter, the selection of produce on the market gets rather thin (cabbage and cabbage and cabbage). In spring, summer, and fall, the choices are endless and the quality is good. I'm not sure about pesticides, but I've had the best peaches of my life here. Be sure to ask for a "kesu" (a plastic bag) and pick your own veggies and fruits, otherwise you'll find some rotten apples or limp carrots among your haul. Prices are usually written on little plaques.

Plentiful, except for good Mexican food items. Excellent bread and meat, and lots of fresh seasonal vegetables. We are looking forward to the summer open-air markets.
Good and cheap. If you spend some time looking, you can find almost everything you want, from peanut brittle to Tabasco sauce. Hit the local produce markets for huge quantities of very good vegetables, cheap. Poke into the little specialty shops around Knez Mihailova and downtown for imported foods. There are no supermarkets, but the "C-Market" chain is everywhere, clean and with a basic but decent selection. You may have to make several stops but you shouldn't have any problems keeping your kitchen stocked.

SHIPING
Pampers Newborn size. Books. Lots of them. (There are some decent English language book stores but only one English library - the British Council on Terazije - and only one small second hand book store - Plato on Knez Mihailova - although used English books can occasionally be found at street sellers along Bulevar Kralja Alexandra.)
Tortillas and tortilla chips. Chocolate chips. Baker's chocolate. Sun-dried tomatoes. Dried cilantro or cilantro seeds.

HELP
Fantastic help at cheap prices.
Lots of help. The baby sitters and nannies will also do light housework and cook a little. There are even a few Thai people (from a rattan furniture joint-venture) who can be hired for weekly cooking duties.
Excellent, honest, inexpensive.
Yes, great. Impeccably honest.

LANGUAGE
You can get around fine with some English and some German. However, a little Serbian goes a loooong way. Learn some phrases like "good morning", "thank you", "I'm sorry" and the numbers, and the Serbs will love you.
Some Serbian would help, but there are lots of Serbs who know a little English. About every third time I get in a cab, the driver tells me in perfect English that he knows where the diplomatic colony is.

English is common among educated people, but the majority of Serbs speak only a few words or none at all. If your assignment will be longer than a couple of months, learning a little Serbo-Croat is definitely worth your while. Don't be spooked by the alphabet, as it isn't as bad as it seems at first. French and German are also useful -- German is nearly as common as English, especially among the older generation.

NEWSPAPERS/TV
The Herald Tribune and the Wall Street Journal are available, although mostly a day late. Also available (most of the times) is The Economist. German and English magazines like Cosmopolitan, Brigitte, etc.
We get AFN and a few other English language channels. Serbian TV will carry American shows and movies with Serbian subtitles. The International Herald Tribune and the Wall Street Journal can be found at a few newsstands.
Some. BBC World and MSNBC are the only channels I get, but I'm told Sky TV is available. Surf the Serbian channels for English movies subtitled in Serbian -- you can find occasional gems this way; somebody at Pink TV seems to be an old movie buff.Time and Newsweek are regularly available at selected newsstands. International Herald Tribune and Financial Times too, if you're willing to pay up to $3 a pop. Other English periodicals, from Playboy through Vanity Fair to the National Geographic, are fairly widely available.

CABLE/SATELLITE TV
Satellite TV is widely available by now. All German stations, BBC International, CNN, MSNBC, some Italian and French programs.
Satellite dishes and receivers are available.
Yes, widely.
In some places.

INTERNET
Available, although still slow. Dial-up mostly although DSL is coming, or so they say. Depending on your phone lines and the location, connections are from 12.0 Kbps up.
Dial-up is the standard. I am typing this out on a 38.6 K connection. Rumor is that A/DSL is coming.
Widely available. The cost is moderate, quality so-so. Be prepared for low bandwidth, cruddy connections, unexplained time-outs, and mysterious server collapses. Some of this is the fault of the ancient and overloaded telephone system. Make sure your ISP rep speaks English. The level of technical competence is surprisingly high. Be patient and back everything up and eventually you'll get through.
