WEATHER
Summer is hot and winter is cold. August in particular is steamy and sticky, so it's everyone's favorite month for taking a vacation. Springs are short but lovely.
Winter should be short and rotten and over by now. I am told that the spring and summer are very nice, especially the long hours of sunlight.
Four-season climate, though usually not too extreme. A slightly cooler DC, or Chicago without the bitterly cold winters. Pack for all seasons and weather conditions.
Like DC, but not as humid and not as cold (that's the reputation, but summer '98 saw 105 degrees and the winter before wasn't very cold.

MONEY
Yes.
Yes. A family or individual can save money. However, there are lots of travel opportunities and items that will thin the wallet.
Sure.
Yes, if you don't travel outside the country much.

TO SPEND
Mostly trips - you're only a hop and a skip away from Budapest, the Croatian coast, Istanbul… Living in Belgrade itself is cheap.
Local items like textiles, leather jackets, electronics, and wine.

GOING BACK
Yes.
I would go again in about ten years; it would be too depressing to see the place while it is still so grubby and run down. Belgrade will never be Prague, but one can tell that the town will clean up good. My spouse does not share my sentiments.
Yep.
Absolutely. If peace broke out and I had the money, I'd visit friends there in a heartbeat! My husband made true friends there!

RECOMMENDED
The "Belgrade Tourist Guide" by Ljubica Corovic is a great little book full of interesting facts on Belgrade. ISBN: 86-7781-069-2.
Right now there are no travel books for Yugoslavia, though this may change soon. Some travel books have a chapter but these tend to be out of date. The Lonely Planet Guide for Eastern Europe is particularly bad here -- outdated, inaccurate, and generally below LP standards -- avoid.

COMMENTS
Serbia is still a cash economy; only a few higher-end stores and restaurants will accept credit cards. ATMs are becoming more common but are not nearly as ubiquitous as in the US or western Europe. Money-changers ("menjacnica") are everywhere, especially downtown - you'll never have to worry about changing money.
