Recent Activities

In the past year Wajima Kiriko Taiko group have performed at various events throughout Japan. Annual events at which the group performs include The National Japanese Taiko Festival in Wajima held in February/March, Wajima Matsuri (festival) in June, Japan Tent in early August and Wajima Taisai (August 23-25). Besides these events the group plays for many other local functions, weddings etc. and particpates in taiko contests around Ishikawa-ken. In the past year the group have performed at festivals and promotional events at the Nagoya Dome, Wakayama, Wakura-onsen and Tokyo and in August 2001, Kita-Kyushu.

Unlike performance taiko, kiriko taiko is extremely versatile. Although traditionally performed on a mobile kiriko, it also lends itself well to stage and because unlike performance taiko where performers play "songs", kiriko taiko allows the player to combine any and all the rhythms they have studied in any order for as long as they like. It is this freedom which makes kiriko taiko so exciting to both perform and to watch.
