Relegate

"I think that about wraps things up for now, Eric, unless you have any other points to mention before I rush off to the airport?"

Tom and I were really trying to do too much in too short a time. He was looking tired and I knew he was, but the new models were ready and our distributors were shouting for their initial supplies. There’d be little peace before the season started. As if reading my thoughts, Tom suddenly said, "lets go ahead and get Ray Shields on board Eric, and fast. We’re losing time!"

"Well Tom his resume sure looked good and six years with Youngmans is pretty solid, but we haven’t checked him out yet. How come he’s available"

"Look Eric, Shields has come highly recommended by Dick Hales and I value Dick’s opinion. After all he has been running our northern warehouse for the past eight years."

"I appreciate that Tom, but…………"

"…………I’m sorry Eric, but time is of the essence. Lets talk to Dick and maybe one of Youngman’s agents - Dick’ll have a name or two - but I think we can trust Dick not to let us down, don’t you? In the meantime, I’m going to get Amanda to set up a start date as soon as possible.."

"OK, Tom," I replied, picking up my papers. "I’ll see to it. Now…call me from LA on Thursday and I’ll give you the new specs."

On Tuesday afternoon, I managed to get hold of Dick Hales. "What’s up, Eric?" his cheery voice echoed out of the receiver.

"Dick, can you tell me a little bit about Ray Shields, you’ve know him some time haven’t you?"

"Heavens yes, I known him seven or eight years. What do you want to know?"

"Oh,……you know. His general experience in distribution, what he’s achieved, track record and so forth. I mean, can he take pressure?"

Dicks laugh boomed out of the reveiver. "Pressure? That guy’s a workaholic. Never knew him not to be rushing about, chasing deals, opening territories and burning the midnight oil."

"I see. Dick, how did he service the distribution network when you were running the wholesale operation?"

"Best I can tell you Eric is that he kept the Youngmans alive during the time their Newark facility was short on supplies. But you should talk to Ben Crossman at Wyatts, he’d know much more bout that side of things. Anything else you want to know?"

I thought for a moment and finally said no and thanked Dick for his information. Over the next couple of days I tried to get hold of Ben Crossman, but I was told by his secretary that he was out of town. When I spoke to Tom on Thursday and gave him the new specifications he asked me about Ray Shields. I gave him a run-down of my conversation with Dick Hales and mentioned that I’d been unable to talk to Crossman. Tom seemed pleased.

"I knew Dick would know the sort of person we need, Eric. Loves pressure! Do we have plenty of that?" Now about the new material to be used on the Mark IV model. I want to…….."

Just before 5 P.M. Amanda came in with the mail and a few messages. "George phoned from Atlanta and said he was trying to get the 4:45 flight. Carolyn has got the new data ready for the spring program. And, oh yes, Ray Shields called. He can start on Monday."

The phone rang. It was Jenkins from central accounting. This was going to be a long one…I winked at Amanda and she said goodnight.

On Monday morning Ray Shields was in with Tom and George. I was about to leave for Dallas on the noon flight when Crossman came on the line.

"Sorry I was unable to return your call before now Eric, but I was stuck in Chicago all last week. What can I do for you?"

That’s OK Ben, it was a small thing, but what do you know about Ray Shields of Youngman’s"?

"Ray Shields? Sure, a nice guy ray. Really tries hard, but it’s a pity he’s so unorganized. I guess some people just can’t take the pressure."

I put the phone down and stared at Tom’s door.
