Whiffs of Smoke - monthly stock picks; trading desk

Our Stock Picks:
What stock will rise the most over the next three months?

What is the hottest stock you know? Which will rise the most
in the next three months? To encourage this kind of creative thinking
--without betting the farm -- at each month end, we each try to find
a high flyer which we think will outperform over the next quarter.
Although a lot of these ideas go down (sometimes a lot!),
it allows the rest of us to find out what someone may be too timid
to recommend to the Club's real portfolio.

Please send in your stock pick
(member with best performing stock over 3 months wins a bottle of wine!):

Trading Desk - Brokers & Dealers:

Zacks Quote & Research

Why should we all consider doing our trading on-line?
Consider what the Commerce Dept. says the potential savings are:

"Nearly 5 million people actively trade stocks online
and pay $8-$30 per trade, versus an average of $80
paid to traditional brokers. In 1997, $614 million
in broker commissions were generated online,
representing 29 percent of all commissions paid
to discount brokers last year."

To compare on-line brokers, go to PC Quote's brokerage center:;
or check out the recent review of 20 on-line brokers by Gomez Advisors
(formerly with Forrester Research), as highlighted by the Boston Globe
(5/5/98 @ C-1: enter keyword "broker"). Gomez gave DLJ Direct
and E-Trade top marks, while Schwab was tied for last!

Now, check out what's out there.
