NEW NEW NEW!!

September 15th, 2007
I received information via an email from Walter Nachtigal after I posted an email on a rootsweb mailing list for the last name Shannon. He supplied me with WONDERFUL news!! I have FINALLY found Julia's married family!

FROM MY (Walter) LOCALITY/CHRONOLOGY INDEX-Highland County, Ohio-collected by Welthy Nachtigal

Highland County, Ohio- formed in 1805- surrounding counties: Clinton, Fayette.Ross, Pike.dams and Brown

James R. Shannon- married Julia Anderson, 28 March, 1833 Morgan Co., OHIO, and married Harriet E. Courtney, 21 January

Information concerning James R. Shannon:
Parents: Joseph Shannon and Temperance Tolbert
Joseph and Temperance's children:
May 11-1811 - Joseph Shannon Washington Co., PA
John Shannon, married Sarah Brookins, May 10 1838
Lucy Shannon, married Josiah Reed, January 16 1840
Louisa Shannon married William H. Hastings, October 29 1840
Margaret Shannon, married Wilson F. Creed, February 25 1849

I still don't have a "born" date for Julia Ann. I'm guessing 1816 as her brother born after her was born in 1818.

James and Julia's children:
1853- Derinda W. Shannon , married Brady Van Pelt, January 27 (information from Walter)

Now here is what I found from the 1850 Census Whoever took the census wrote very badly so I will try to decipher what it says regarding information concerning James and Julia. Highland Co., Ohio.

770 770 James Shannon 39 Farmer
Julian Shannon, 35 homemaker O. (I think they meant for it to say OH, but she was really born in MD) (So maybe she was born in 1815)
Loinda (?), 14
Wm. S. (William S.?), 12
Lucetta (?), 10
Hulda J. (?) 8
Martha A., 6
Rebecca A., 1

They are living next door to James' parents:
Joseph Shannon, 66, Farmer PA.
Temperance, 62 homemaker
Joseph (jr.), 29
and the last name I can't make out. Looks like Tho., 21

The 1860 Census: Highland Twp, Washington Co., Ohio
James Shannon, 49, Farmer, PA
Julia, 45, MD
Martha, 11
Rebecca, 11 (discrepancies to the last census for ages)
Elizabeth, 2

Living next door is:
W.T. Shannon, 24 (William Thomas? And is this Wm. S. from the 1850 census? I thought his middle initial was "S"?)
Sarah Shannon, 19

And living not too far away is George Anderson. I'm wondering if this isn't Julia Ann's brother George?
George Anderson, 23, OH
Mary, 20, OH
Pricillia, 6.12 OH

1870 Census: Highland Twp, Washington Co., Ohio
James Shannon, 59, Farmer, PA
Julia, 55, Keeps House, Maryland
Elizabeth, 11

1880 Census:
Unfortunately somewhere between 1870 and 1880 Julia Ann Anderson-Shannon dies.
James Shannon, however, has gone on with his life and married a Harriet.

James Shannon, 68, Farmer
Harriet Shannon, 36!, keeping house, OH.
Elizabeth Shannon, 21, home. OH

1890 Census: Unavailable.
1900 Census: James Shannon does not show up. He would have been 88 by then.
Harriet Shannon, however, does show up.
Harriet Shannon, (born about 1846), 54
James E. Shannon 26. Did Harriet have a son? He would be 20 at this date, not 26! His birth year is listed as 1874 and father from PA! I am assuming here that James E. Jr. was not available when the 1880 census was taken. But he must have been like 4 years old. Where was he? He has to be James Sr.'s son because it lists Jr's father as being born in PA.

Harriet drops out of site for the 1910 census. Did she die?

I pick up with James E. Shannon in the 1920 Census.
He is living in Washington, Highland Co., OH.
He is 45 years old and has him stated as being born in 1875
Birthplace is OH.
And he is head of household.
Married to Eva A.
His father was born in PA
Mother, Harriet, born OH.
Harriet is NOT dead. She is living with James and Eva.
James and Eva have the following children:
Irwin L. Shannon, 17
Lillian A. Shannon, 9

1930 Census: James E. Shannon, 55, Eva, 52, Irwin, 28, Lillian, 19. No Harriet. I'm assuming she is now dead.

Thomas Shannon - (from Walter) son of Joseph and Temperance Tolbert. Married Kiziah Parks March 31st, 1853 and then Alta F. Edgington.
Minerva A. Shannon - (from Walter, probably the daughter of James and Julia) (although I found no record of it) married Augustine Creed, March 4th, 1850 **NOTE: If you will notice at the top when I listed out James and Julia's children, there was a "Margaret" who married a Wilson S. Creed. 1849/

Someone (meaning either Joseph and Temp or James and Julia)  had a Benjamin, Samuel P. and a Joseph Jr. and an Alexander who died early.

1853- Lisetta Shannon- married Ephriam West, December 29 (I have her in the 1850 census) born to James and Julia.

1854- Joseph Alson Shannon- born January 10

Joseph Alson a son of Thomas O, Shannon and Kiziah Parks

1859 Wells Tolbert Shannon- married Sarah E. Mullenix, November 1 1859 and had: Mary E. (1862) Julia A. (1863), Martha (1865). I believe he got married a second time to Serena M. Miller on 10-17-1872. It looks like according to Ohio Deaths, he died one day before his wedding anniversary with Serena (10-16-1921)

Wells Tolbert a son of James R. Shannon and Julia Anderson

So really, I have no idea which of these people belonged to James and Julia. If I took all the ones listed here and combined them it would look like this:

1836 - Loinda (?)
1838 - William S.
1840 - Lucetta (?)
1842 - Hulda J. (?)
1844 or 49 - Martha Shannon
1849 - Rebecca A. Shannon
1853 - Lisetta or Derinda Shannon
1858 - Elizabeth Shannon
1859 - Wells Tolbert Shannon
? - Minerva A. Shannon

Children from James and Harriet:
1875 -  James Jr. Shannon

Children I am not sure who they belong to:
Benjamin, Samuel P. and a Joseph Jr. and an Alexander who died early.
