BIRDS OF N.Y.C.

The common crow commonly known as the American crow is a black colored bird that adapts to almost any habitat, the crow feeds largely on the ground, but also on trees, on insects spiders frogs, and reptiles. Also they feed on small mammals, birds and thier eggs. It also has a tendency to scavenge. The crow is mostly known for being in large groups that are called flocks.

The Blue Jay is a close relative to the crow,the blue jay is a colorful bird. The blue jay feeds on nuts seeds grain and also fruit,the blue jay also enjoys berries insects and the eggs and young of other birds. This bird can mainly be found in city parks and gardens.

The European starling is one of the most known birds in urban areas, the starling feed on the ground on insects larvae earthworms slugs,snails and centipedes. the starlings also enjoys fruit grain, berries and seeds. This bird can mostly be seen in any city park.

The House Sparrow is a small bird, 5-6 inches in length the sparrow adapts to almost any habitat, and is friendy with humans and is known all over the world. The sparrow was introduced to the city in 1850 they were released in central park, since then they have populated all over North and South america they appear to be able to adjust to new enviroments. House sparrows are fond perched on trees and buildings, but they feed on the ground the sparrows diet consists of grain insects, and food scraps given out by humans.

The Baltimore Oriole is a small bird 7-8 inches in length, the orioles diet consists of caterpillars, beetles ants and other insects as well as fruit and berries. they can be spotted in city parks and gardens.

The American robin is a visitor to the N.Y.C. bird scene during the spring,and some stay in the vicinity all year round. They are found in gardens and city parks. Their diet consists of insects, earthworms, fruit, and berries.

The mourning dove is a local fixture in the city, it is relalted to the pigeon. They are smaller than the pigeon, usually 11-13 inches in length. They are ground living birds that mainly feed on weed seeds grain, and snails. In flight the bird makes a pleasant low whistling sound. The bird is spotted in city parks.

The american cardinal is also a local fixture to the city, it is a relatively small bird usually 7-8 inches in length. The male cardinal is bright red and the female yellow. The bird can be scene in city parks.

Last but not least is the Rock Dove which people identify as the pigeon, in most citys the bird is considered to be a pest and it is one of the few birds that come in many color varations ranging from all white to gray and black. They feed on the ground and are found in flocks. Their diet includes grains, snails and handouts from humans, the pigeon can be found any where.
