Tommy's Story

Tommy was born February 2, 1956. It was evident very soon after birth that Tommy suffered from a bleeding disease. In fact, he needed over 1500 pints of blood during his short 42 years of life. Because of the bleeding disease Tom spent many days in Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Since he was confined to bed, art was just something that he acquired a knack for; when my young friends and I were out playing baseball, Tom was usually stuck inside, wistfully watching from a window. Art became his window to the world and he became quite good at it.

In his preteens, Tom developed a tumor on his adrenal gland. He spent more than 5 months in the hospital. During his hospitalization, he underwent multiple surgeries in just a few weeks. A book was written describing his ordeal and the experience of his surgeon, Dr. Thomas Morse. Tommy was in fact, the first hemophiliac to survive this particular type of tumor.
