Safety First! Making You Safe |

FIRE! Two things that really scare me when I go racing. One, an axle coming out of a GM rear end and flipping down the race track into your windshield, axle end first. The other is FIRE! You've got the little fire extinguisher. Is big enough to put out a fire and or will you be awake to use it. The Enduro Rules do not require a fire/drivers suit for Enduro Drivers, just long sleeve shirts or jackets. Will that be enough? Maybe? If you only plan to run once or twice maybe it's not worth the expense. But, if you are going to be serious about your racing. You may want to think about some protection against fire. Most articles that I have read say that you want two layers to protect you against fire. You can go out and buy a double layered SPF3A-2/5, racing suit for $350 to 400. (Between the helmet and the suit, you have now invested more money that you may have in the racecar.) A basic single layer suit SPF3A-2/1, will cost about $70 to $80. Fireproof under wear is about $35-40 for each top and bottom. Double layer racing gloves $35-$40. Socks $16. And a pair of racing boots cost about $80. With this should keep you from getting burned for 10 to 20 seconds depending on the SPF rating. That maybe enough to get out of the car. Don't forget to replace them when the get worn out. I read about a guy at I-70 Speedway that had his hands severely burned, because he had holes in his gloves. Remember, you've got to go to work Monday morning. |
