Surnames mentioned on this page
Lazarus Howlett,
James Martin Howlett and James Martin Howlett 2nd,
William Howlett,

From on Wednesday, 18 February, 2009

I have just found your site and I am ecstatic to have resolved what was a major problem for me with my genealogy research.
My wife is a Moss and I had traced her family back to 1800 in Occold in Suffolk where a John Moss married a Sophia. I knew from the 1841 census etc that he had a niece living with him - Lucy Howlett born 1825 in Wolverstone or Holbrook Suffolk.
After much consulting of records - it seemed that every mention of John Moss was eother obscured by an ink blot or some other impediment - I concluded he was married to Sophia Sheldrake but where did the Howlett niece come from. I suddenly found upon Lazarus Howlett marrying Lucy Sheldrake in 1823 in Freston, Suffolk and things became a bit clearer.
Today I had a feeling he might have been transported leaving his baby daughter with his sister Sophia and..... You proved it all for me. All for stealing a shaving brush!!!

And on Wednesday, 25 February, 2009
Thank you for the clues! I have just checked through the records and Lucy Sheldrake married Thomas Woollard on 26-12-1834 in Tattingstone.
They had 9 children - 3 dying in infancy - and among them was Lucy Woollard born in 1836.
My guess is that she disowned her family from the Lazarus Howlett marriage and 9 year old Lucy went to live with her uncle. 11 year old Richard must have made his own life - interesting to know where he spent his younger years - maybe the poorhouse??

Received 11 Aug 2008.
Lazarus Howlett was born about 1800. He wed Lucy Sheldrake on 5 Aug 1823 in Freston, Suffolk. Lucy was born about 1800 in Tallingstone Suffolk.

1. Richard Howlett Sheldrake (Lazarus) was born about 1823 in Poor House, Tattingstone, Suffolk. He was christened on 19 Jan 1823. He died before 1871.
Richard married Agnes Watson daughter of John Watson on 1 Mar 1852 in Free St Clements Church Aberdeen. Agnes was born about 1824. She died about 1873 in Sunderland .
They had the following children:
3 M i. Richard Howlett Sheldrake was born on 14 Oct 1852 in Aberdeen Scotland. He was christened on 15 Dec 1852 in Saint Nicholas, Aberdeen. He died about 1895 in Sunderland . Richard married Emma Johnson about 1874 in Sunderland . Emma was born about 1859 in Sunderland. She died about 1902 in Sunderland .

Thankyou, Elizabeth, for replying to my email and for giving me the other sites to look at.
On your site the information that was posted by Ms Tanner? had some mistakes in Sarah's name.
Her surname was Copley and where she was married was Sorrell which is a place in Tasmania.
I have attached where I found this information. I was also sent some typewritten information from a relative that had Sorrell as the place where they were married.
I'm just sending it on so you can update your site which gave me the names of all their children, which was wonderful.

I have found a site that lists Lazarus's Parents (and brothers and sisters) which you may wish to add to Lazarus's page. It is now defunct
There are quite a few James and William's and they all seem to come from Suffolk so they may be related to your William.

Keep up the good work,
Regards, Helen Middleton

Hello Elizabeth,

I saw your notes on the Lazarus Howlett family, and I am the Marie Tanner who entered the details on the first families database, along with Denis Howlett, whose details are almost identical. I dont know where the Sorell Copeland came from, as I didnt put it in my entry. Could this be deleted as Lazarus wife was Sarah Copley, not Sorell or Copeland. Sarah was christened as Sarah Cobley, on April 13, 1815, Publow, Somerset, daughter of Joseph and Harriot Cobley. Lazarus and Sarahs daughter Jane was my Gt Grandmother. When Sarah and her sister Mary were sent to Tasmania, they arrived as Copleys, perhaps wanting to start a new life with a different name.

You have done a lot of research with your genealogy, haven't read through the 8 pages yet, will let you know if there is anything else to be added.

Regards from Marie Tanner,

Hi Elizabeth, I see that you have updated your Howlett web site with James Robinson and Mary Ann Howlett's information . . . thank you very much for that.
However, James Robinson's birth year is 1840 - he was born in Hobart Town Tasmania to Benjamin Charles Robinson and Mary Martha Atkinson. I believe that Benjamin was the convict sent to Tasmania in 1836 on board the Henry Porcher. We have eliminated all the other Benjamin Robinsons.
Many thanks again for your wonderful web site - which has enabled me to find David Robinson and Grt Grandfather James Robinson's parents.
I don't know if you are interested in all the ancestors and descendents of the William Howlett b. 1813 Woolpit Suffolk and Frances Warren b. 1815 in Earl Stoneham Suffolk England, who immigrated to Australia on the ship Blanche in 1852. I have all the Howlett ancestors right back to James Howlett b. 1652 in Woolpit Suffolk and his wife Elizabeth. I have also managed to trace many of the descendents born here in Australia from their children.
I have my family tree on the Genes Reunited site and could export it for you if you are interested!
Regards
Jenny

The information I have about the Atkinson family all came from David Robinson.
They apparently immigrated to Tasmania on the Barge Lochiel - departed Leith 13th April 1833 sh: 204, arrived Hobart Town 17th Sept in 1833 sh: 204. They were originally from Edinburgh Scotland. I shall include the Ships passenger list that David sent me. As you can see the spelling of their name was slightly different (Aitkinson).

Hello Just writing to say I have found your site very informative and helpful in finding my ancestors.

I am sure you have realised already that the daughters of William Thomas and Frances Elizabeth Howlett, namely Mary Ann and Ann Maria married brothers James and Edward, sons of Benjamin Robinson and Mary Robinson (nee Atkinson).

3. Mary Ann Howlett 1846 - 1874 #4507 aged 28, wed 1863 to James Robinson

5. Ann Maria Howlett 1855 #5587 wed 1875 #2200 to Edward Robinson

James after the death of Mary Ann in 1874 remarried in 1875 to Ellender Bruce also 28 years of age at the time of her marriage to James. I have been unable to trace them after their marriage.

I have been unable however to go further back than Benjamin whom I believe was born in 1813 in ?Birmingham Warwickshire and I believe transported to Tasmania in 1836.

kind regards, David Robinson

Hello
Further to your enquiry regarding Mary Martha Atkinson, Mary I believe was born in Edinburgh 1821 to James Atkinson (?aka John) and Jane Draffin (? Draffen).
They immigrated to Tasmania as a family in 1836 aboard the Barqe Lochiel 13/04/1833 arriving 17/09/1833.
Mary was one of 8 siblings. I regret however I have been unable to find to date any records of birth or marriage for the family in Scotland.
I hope this is of some assistance to you.
regards
David

Tasmanian records are great - when I find what I want. This time the "Permission to Marry' rules seem to have lapsed before Ann Atkinson wed Benjamin Robinson, which is a pity in the effort to clarify ancestry.
