Wendy Repass- Chapter 1: The Coming of Age

You'd be forgiven for thinking that the Charlottesville-Staunton are is the land of the female singer-songwriter, what with Allard, Worrell, Barb Martin et al. But Wendy Repass has an unusual wild-card style that separates her from the rest of this admittedly fine pack- a willingness to shake things up and get weird. She's a folkie who remembers that the softer moments carry more weight if there's an occasional blast of something else, and she's not afraid to rock out.

her self-released (and, with Kevin McNoldy self-produced) Chapter 1: The Coming of Age has an awful title, but the folk-pop songs presented are thankfully free of pretension, ranging in mood from jubilant to anthemic to downright funky (courtesy of some nice bass work from Jason Kapp). On cuts like "Nothing's Gonna Bring Me Down" and the angry "Mud and Tears," Repass shows that she's got the goods as a songwriter, and as a unique arranger with a penchant for the curve ball. Her debut CD- on the indie Dream Sequence label- spotlights a talent to keep an eye on.
