Maybe you can't buy happiness, but these
days you can certainly charge it! Starting from the basic
denim skirts that I already had, I figured that a base layer of a
body suit was probably in order. Being a bit pushed away by the
higher prices of the catalogs I had collected, I instead ventured
on various 'research' trips to the likes of Kmart,
and Target stores. This also allowed me to browse
the make-up, shoes and sweater sections. (I was hoping to get a
dark red, red and black or perhaps maroon sweater to go over the
body suit, much like the Fantasy picture above)
Before finding a jump suit, I took one late night trip to
and came across a supervisor named
Becky and asked her for assistance in selecting make-up for my
hysterics. She was a petite little thing, but was
close to my real skin and hair color so she made an excellent
accomplice. After explaining the outfit I was hoping to put
together, she helped me pick out some reasonably priced makeup:
(I eventually went back for a brown eyebrow pencil, classic ivory pressed powder make-up and chilled grape eye shadow - three shades)
I also picked up a pair of shoes on the way out that were a size 11 that turned out to be one size too big, but weren't that expensive. In fact, after my newer shoes (see below) gave me some nasty blisters, the larger shoes were much more comfortable later on. One last stop on the way out the door got me another pair of stockings to replace the one's that had ran a few months back. They ran quickly as well :-(
It was difficult the first night 'trying on' my new face
paints, with nothing more than a small compact mirror to assist.
So the next day was another trip to target. Meanwhile, I also
still needed some Red press-on nails as
was low in stock. So I picked up a
cheap wall mirror and some press-ons and noticed on the way out
that they had a bodysuit just like I wanted and it was "ON
SALE". This shopping thing was getting far too addictive!
For jewelry, I was able to use an old silver necklace - three
times wrapped - as a nice bracelet, and another flat silver
necklace to show very nicely over the black body suit. I never
did find the type of sweater I was after, but I did find a red
shirt at
that did nicely. I did pick up some
silver hoop earrings and even went to the trouble of peircing my
other ear to facilitate wearing them.
Still stuck for a Wig, I tried a few hair salons in town but
was only overraught with the fact that they were real hair wigs
running from $150 and up. Almost ready to capitulate for one of
the cheap looking wigs from the store in Ypsilanti, I got the
idea to look for actual costume shops. Sure enough there was one
right here in town that was open all year - not just
. My first trip there did not really get my interest
in any one wig, but after leaving, one or two stuck in my mind. I
eventually settled on a 'Party Page' shoulder length wig in dark
brown that was only about $30! (I later went back and got a
blonde show girl wig which you may see in some pictures later)
The last 'pre-outting' trip to speak of chanced me into a nice double strap shoulder bag to hold my make-up that was clearance priced at Kmart because the zipper was stuck. About five minutes This was enough to facilitate my first night out. I was supposed to meet my roommate at a party that was being hosted by a girl from work. (or where I used to work anyway - see The Conception of an Idea) He gave me rough instructions and said he would be there around 11:30. I told him I wasn't going to go, but after he left, I broke down and went through the process of gettin ready. I headed out at 11:30 and forgot the instructions. In that the details he laid out were not too complex, I figured I could find the place. I finally found 'a' house, but was not sure if it was the right one or not. Some folks were out back. I walked around for a while and talked to a few girls who eventually figured me out, but they were no help in letting me know if it was the right house as they were crashing the party themselves.
After not seeing my roommate anywhere, and not seeing anyone I recognized (not to mention not seeing very many people in costume) I headed out about 15 minutes later. I quickly went home and got out of the outfit - it was scary - I looked better than some of my recent dates!
The next night, I also dared a sojourn to a local 'alternative
bar' (for the gory details on this, check out - Caught up in the Limelight)
On the way home from the bar, I stopped off at
to try to seek out Becky and show her
the end result of what her make-up selections created. She was
nowhere in sight, but noone seemed to know better. I stopped
again in the make-up and selected the stuff I would by next time
and even stopped to try on some other shoes on the way out, as
the one's I had originally knabbed were one size too big.
The next day I did go back to
. I picked
up some perfumed body spray in the process. (this was also the
trip that facilitated the extra make-up) I bought the shoes a
half-size small (9 1/2), as they had looked better on my feet
when trying them the night before, and did not really fit that
bad - or so I thought. The blisters later proved me wrong. They
are a real cute/sexy pair of black velvety 2 3/4" heels. I
was originally looking at getting a higher heal, but at 5'
9", I did not really want to be an amazon when done. On the
way out, I also got the cutest little ankle bracelet and a new
white pair of silky mist panty hose - what a sight that
combination turned out to be with the black shoes!
The last purchase, was off the newly modified
web page (you can order online now!). I placed
an order for a four-pad girdle to give me hips, an extra pair of
control top (corset) panty hose in white and the cutest little
satin broomstick skirt that I had been oggling in the catalog for
weeks.
