India Update!

The lads were in India recently...

They filmed the video for their next single, 'Obvious', on Ashvam Beach in Goa. Nicky stated "I love Goa. The beaches are beautiful. I will come here on my second honeymoon." However Nicky assured reporters that the video was "not a Baywatch kinda video." Apparently the video is full of special effects, where everything the guys touch explodes into flames!

They also performed at the MTV 'IMMIES' awards on Nov. 12th and picked up an award for 'Best international pop act'! During the show Nicky explained that they would dedicate the award to one of their security who had just lost his mother and who had returned to London.

The picture shows Westlife at the immies where they wore indian traditional "sherwanies":

Mandy

Congratulations for the guys, as 'Mandy' debuted at number 1 in the UK singles charts this afternoon! It's Westlife's 12th number one, and their first UK number 1 for just over a year. 'Mandy' is a cover of Barry Manilow's classic 'Brandy', first released in the 1970s.

'Turnaround' for Westlife's latest album release!

As you may well know, Westlife's eagerly-anticipated fourth album is released this coming Monday, 24th November. The album is entitled 'Turnaround' and in fact, that may be precisely what it is! Kian states that he thinks it is closer in
style to the band's very first LP 'Westlife' than any of the others... and goes on to say that 'Turnaround' and 'Westlife' are probably his favourite of Westlife's releases.

The album contains two singles - 'Hey Whatever', which reached number 4 in the UK charts earlier this year, and 'Mandy' which is set to enter the UK charts this weekend

Mandy was originally a hit for Barry Manilow back in 1975 and is a song in the vein of classic Westlife ballads - full of emotion, melody driven and beautifully produced, featuring soaring vocals and a dramatic string section. The song starts softly and subtly, building up to an epic finale, and the video reflects this with a heroic performance in a larger-than-life setting that echoes the emotion and grandeur of the song.

Hey Whatever: Westlife's 15th top 5 UK charts' hit

Hey whatever hit the UK music shops last Monday in the bid for the band's 12th success in reaching the UK number 1 spot, together with being released a friday sooner on their home market.

Unfortunately, despite high expectations, Hey whatever only managed to enter the
UK single charts at #4, being beaten by the Black Eyed Peas with their song Where is the love, still firmly staying at the top for the 3rd week in a row, the highest new entry on #2, former S Club member Rachel Stevens with her first solo single Sweet dreams my LA Ex and Dido with her hit White flag ending at #3 one more week.

UK Single Charts Top 5 as of 21st September 2003

1 WHERE IS THE LOVE -BLACK EYED PEAS

2 SWEET DREAMS MY LA EX - RACHEL STEVENS

3 WHITE FLAG - DIDO

4 HEY WHATEVER - WESTLIFE

5 PANDORA'S KISS - LOUISE

On the
Irish charts Hey Whatever reached #2 as the highest new entry, staying behind the Black Eyed Peas which have managed to retain the top position for the fourth consecutive week.

Irish single charts Top 3 as of 19th September

1 WHERE IS THE LOVE - BLACK EYED PEAS

2 HEY WHATEVER - WESTLIFE

3 WHITE FLAG - DIDO

REVIEWS ON THE CHART POSITION

On the
Dotmusic site they had this to say on the HW chart position:

4 HEY WHATEVER (Westlife)

Some way away from the titanic battle taking place for Number One is the second biggest new hit of the week - an unfamiliar situation for the band in question. Westlife's phenomenal chart records are by now the stuff of legend, 11 Number One singles from 13 releases and all since 1999. With all that in mind, and given that their last chart single Queen Of My Heart last December was one of those chart-toppers, you would have expected this brand new single from a forthcoming new album to fly easily to the top. The fact that it has not done so will actually attract less comment than it might have done in the past, Westlife's chart invicibility having been wrecked by the failure of 2002s Bop Bop Baby to chart any higher than Number 5. Nonetheless you now have to question whether the Irish stars are ever going to add to their tally of Number One hits. The fact remains that they are a pop band now well into their fifth year of hitmaking, well beyond the stage that their core teen audience starts to grow out of them. Add to that the suspicion that the Westlife formula is growing more than a little tired amongst even the casual audience and you have the recipe for this to be Westlife's least successful promotional campaign yet. Still, let us not pour too much cold water on this single. It is after all their 14th successsive Top 5 single and a good one at that. It is also an evironmentally friendly track, containing almost 80% recycled material. By that I mean that the song was originally recorded and released by the Irish group Relish under the slightly more wonderful title of Rainbow Zephyr. The Westlife version is more of a revision than a cover, featuring changed lyrics and a new arrangement - and crucially it is this one that has become the hit single.

New album details...
The guys are busy putting on the finishing touches to the as-yet-untitled fifth album which is scheduled for release in the UK on November 10th. It will contain 12 tracks, including the single "Hey Whatever" (to be released September 15th in the UK). Other tracks that will appear on the album include "Feelings" - which is said to be a typical Westlife ballad - as well as a cover of Mr Big's song "Be With You", and also a song entitled "When a Man Loves a Woman" (it hasn't yet been revealed whether this is a cover of the Michael Bolton song). The release of 'Hey Whatever' will be followed by another single release, tentatively planned for November 17.

Did you know...
"Hey Whatever" is a remake of an original song entitled "Rainbow Zephyr", written and recorded by Irish band "Relish"! The original version of the song was released as a single in Ireland 2 years ago, where it charted in the top 20. Only the title and a few lyrics in the chorus have been altered for the Westlife version of the song.
Relish drummer Karl Papenfus, who wrote the track with his brother Ken, said they were "chuffed to bits" that Westlife had chosen their track. And he said the band were "pleasantly surprised" with the result. He said, "We had heard that Westlife were fans of our music and we knew that they had been to watch us in concert before. But when they contacted our record company EMI to express an interest in recording Rainbow Zephyr, we were surprised, but chuffed to bits. Ken and I have worked very hard writing our songs, so to have a band like Westlife, who have notched up so many No 1s, record one of our tracks, is a major compliment. We were told that Westlife were looking for a new direction for their next album and we are delighted that Rainbow Zephyr has been given a new lease of life." Karl said the band did not know what to expect before hearing Westlife's new version. He said, "We wanted it to be representative of our song and when we heard it, I have to say, we were pleasantly surprised. They sing their hearts out on it and I think it's their best song to date." He added, "If it goes to No 1 for Westlife we'll be thrilled. Whenever they release a song, it's guaranteed to do well."
A spokesman for Westlife's record company BMG confirmed that the Irish band are planning to release their own version of Rainbow Zephyr. He said, "The guys liked the song and decided to record it.They changed the lyrics in the chorus and the title. It's a great song and should go to No 1."
If so, it'll be Westlife's 12th chart topper.....we're keeping our fingers crossed!

New Westlife single - Hey Whatever!

westlifeweb.com is back again after an break, and so are Westlife*
, with a BRAND NEW single set for release on September 15th, entitled 'Hey Whatever'. After recent comments from the guys that they were "bored" with their sound they've come up with something completely new (according to WL's official site, it's "quite a different musical style for the band") so..keep your ears peeled! The song was premiered on regional radio this afternoon, but if you missed it (like us..*sob*!) you can listen to a soundfile of it at shanefilan.org.uk. Meanwhile, you can read the lyrics here online at westlifeweb.com.

The guys are going to be shooting the video for the single in London this coming week. Apparently the video will be in black & white, and according to a source, it's going to have a retro feel - "all the clothes, props and cars came straight from the sixties". Shane will be driving vintage cars in the video and all the lads are said to have been watching cult British films from the 60s to prepare for the shoot!

Westlife celebrate.... & more news!

As you have probably heard, Westlife's latest single, Tonight, entered the UK charts at number 3 - see a pic of Kian after a night out celebrating their chart success (in London club Click) here!

Celebrations were also in store at Dunk 'N' Funk 2003 celebrity basketball tournament, held at Crystal Palace Sports Stadium on April 30th, where the team consisting of Kian and Bryan, Hanif (MTV), Jason Gorman, Michael Bree (French league player) and a member of the BMG radio promotions team won all their games against D-Side, Triple 8, So Solid Crew and One True Voice in an exciting final which Westlife won by two points!

This evening the guys are hoping to pick up awards at the Capital FM Awards, held in aid of Help A London Child, which takes place at London's Royal Lancaster Hotel, where they are nominated for Favourite International Group, Favourite International Single (for 'World Of Our Own'), Favourite Concert (for the 'World Of Our Own' Tour) and Favourite Music Website (for westlife.com)

...Look out for a forthcoming frank Nicky interview in OK! Magazine.... Nicky looks set to sign a lucritive six figure sum deal with the magazine, after a friend of the band said ,"Yes Nicky is in talks at the moment and he looks set to sign the deal soon." He will apparently give an indepth interview about ups and downs in his private life, wiping the slate clean and introducing us to two very special people in his life. When asked who these two special people were the friend simply said: "That's what the whole deal is about. Nicky wants to wipe the slate clean, you'll have to wait for the deal to be finalised to find out."

Meanwhile, Westlife's ‘Unbreakable Greatest Hits’ Tour kicked off in style in Cardiff on April 13th. Check out reviews on our
Touring '03 page! Apparently the stage alone cost seven million euro. The band’s hectic schedule of gigs involves travelling the length and breadth of Europe to do 62 concerts in just over three months. Next stop is the London Arena tomorrow night, April 17th. According to a source close to the guys,“The band have put a lot of effort into their performance with hectic rehearsals right up to last Sunday night. First night nerves are now over and the boys are ready to make their mark with their biggest tour yet. The stage runs the whole length of each venue so fans get to see the boys as much as possible.” Popband Six who were formed from Irish Popstars programme (and who are managed by Louis Walsh) are the support act.

Mark joins the Bleach Boys

As you may already know, Mark dyed his hair blond while in Ireland over Christmas. He said "I got bored with my old hairstyle and I fancied a change. The other lads have been giving me a bit of stick but they're getting used to it." His ne

w look can be seen in the video for Westlife's forthcoming single, Tonight, which was filmed in London on January 15th. The single will be out in the shops on March 10th.

Apparently Mark not only sported a new hairdo for the video - but also a black eye (covered up by makeup though!). A source stated: "We managed to cover it okay for the video, but it took us a while to bully him into telling us how it happened. Apparently he'd had a drink or two the night before and because the combat trousers he was wearing were so baggy, he tripped over and bashed his eye."
