Plot: This story is a "what if?", in this case, "What if 'Will & Grace' was set in the 1940s in a murder myster?" . So all the characters are still the same personality wise, but now they have different jobs, don't know each other as well, etc. Will is a detective who is hired by Grace to solve a case. The cast is listed below and what character they're playing.

SCENE III:

(THE BOYS' CLUB. IT IS A LARGE ROOM, WITH A DANCE FLOOR IN THE CENTRE, FULL OF HAPPY COUPLES DANCING. UPBEAT MUSIC IS PLAYING. THERE IS A WELL STOCKED BAR TO THE LEFT, A STAGE IN FRONT OF THE DANCE FLOOR, AND THE ENTRANCE AND TABLES AND CHAIRS TO THE RIGHT. WILL, GRACE, AND THE TAXI DRIVER ENTER.)

WILL {VOICE-OVER}: "The club was a strange one. It was located in seedy downtown and didn't have much of a line-up. The bouncer at the front barely glanced at us before waving us through. I thought it was unusual, but I wasn't here to check the club out, I was here to....to..."

(WILL PAUSES AND LOOKS AT GRACE.)

WILL: "Uh...remind me, what are we here for?"

GRACE (ROLLING HER EYES): "I think my boyfriend, Ben, was murdered by the mob at this club and I need you to find him...or what's left of him." (SHE BEGINS TO SOB AND WILL HANDS HER ANOTHER TISSUE.) "Thanks."

WILL (TO TAXI DRIVER): "Why don't you go get us a table, this shouldn't take long."

(THE TAXI DRIVER NODS AND WALKS OVER TO THE TABLE SIDE. WILL TURNS BACK TO GRACE.)

GRACE: "What's that guy's name anyway?"

WILL (SHRUGGING): "I dunno." (ONCE AGAIN GRACE ROLES HER EYES; WILL BEGINS TALKING IN A VOICE OVER.) "I figured this case would be easy. Ms. Adler's boyfriend was bound to turn up sooner or later, and in the meantime-"

(THE MUSIC STOPS PLAYING AND THE COUPLES ON THE DANCE FLOOR STARE AROUND IN CONFUSION. AT THE BAR, JACK POPS UP FROM BEHIND THE COUNTER, WEARING A WHITE SHIRT AND A BLACK VEST.)

JACK: "Would whoever's doing the stupid voice over cut it out? It's drowning out the music!"

(WILL TURNS AWAY, PRETENDING TO BE LOOKING AT SOMETHING, AND THE MUSIC STARTS UP AGAIN AND THE COUPLES CONTINUE TO DANCE)

WILL (TO GRACE): "Who's that?" (INDICATES TO JACK)

GRACE: "That's Jack Black. He's the bartender here and co-owns this club. He's a very odd character. He makes out with half the men in this place, but never goes home with any of them. He saw Ben here last night, maybe he knows where he is."

(AT THAT MOMENT, KAREN WALKS INTO THE ROOM FROM A DOOR BEHIND THE BAR. SHE SMILES AND WINKS AT JACK, THEN HEADS TOWARDS THE STAGE. SHE'S WEARING A BLACK SLEEVELESS DRESS, LONG BLACK GLOVES, AND A PEARL NECKLACE.)

GRACE (INDICATING TO KAREN): "That's Karen Walker, Jack's partner. She's the lounge singer here, and a very good one at that. But she's got a really rude personality. Whenever I see her, she insults my outfit."

WILL (TRYING NOT TO LAUGH): "Gee, I can't imagine why she'd do something like that. Do you know anyone else here?"

GRACE (POINTING TO THE PIANO, WHERE JOSH IS SITTING, BEGINNING TO PLAY): "Only Josh, the pianist. He's the nicest one of the three, he's so sweet. A little too sweet actually. I think I'm going to avoid him if I can."

(GRACE AND WILL HEAD OVER TO THE BAR. THEY SIT DOWN. JACK APPROACHES THEM. IN THE BACKGROUND, KAREN BEGINS TO SING "TEN CENTS A DANCE".)

JACK: "Alright, what'll it be?" (NOTICES GRACE) "What are you doing here?!"

GRACE (CONFUSED): "Uh...looking for my boyfriend."

JACK (FLUSTERED): "Oh, of course, sorry. So...what'll it be?"

WILL: "I'm Detective Will Truman. Do you remember the man this woman was with last night?"

JACK (WORRIED): "Why?"

WILL: "Well, he's missing."

JACK: "Nope, never seen him."

WILL: "Are you sure?"

JACK: "I'm completely sure. Now, if you'll excuse me."

(JACK WALKS AWAY QUICKLY. HE GOES ON STAGE, WHISPERS SOMETHING IN KAREN'S EAR, AND POINTS TO GRACE. KAREN NODS AND JACK WALKS OFF STAGE.)

WILL (TO GRACE): "I'm going to go talk to the pianist, see if he knows anything."

(WILL WALKS OFF TOWARDS THE PIANIST. GRACE REMAINS AND GRABS JACK'S ARM AS HE RETURNS TO THE BAR.)

GRACE: "Are you absolutely sure you haven't seen Ben? He's tall, black, good looking, well dressed, great smile-"

JACK: "Look, I already told you - wait a minute...did you say 'well dressed'?"

GRACE: "Yes, he wears the finest Italian suits."

JACK (POINTING): "Is that him?"

(GRACE TURNS AND SEES BEN SITTING ALONE AT A TABLE.)

GRACE: "Ben!"

(SHE RUNS OVER TO HIM. BEN LOOKS UP, SEES GRACE, AND TRIES TO LEAVE, BUT SHE CATCHES HIM JUST AS HE'S RISING UP FROM THE TABLE.)

GRACE: "Hi sweetie, I've been looking EVERYWHERE for you! Where did you go last night?"

BEN: "Grace, I told you last night, this relationship is over."

GRACE (HIGH PITCHED): "Noooo! No it's not, we're getting along so well."

BEN: "Grace, it's over. Goodbye."

GRACE: "But-but-but....

(BEN GETS UP AND EXITS THE ROOM. GRACE STANDS THERE, LOOKING UPSET. SHE REACHES INTO TOP AND PULLS OUT A TISSUE. MEANWHILE, WILL IS STANDING NEXT TO JOSH, WHO IS PLAYING THE PIANO. KAREN FINISHES SINGING AND WALKS OFF STAGE.)

WILL: "Hi, I'm Detective Will Truman and I was wondering-"

JOSH (WHISPERING): "I know why you're here, and I can help."

WILL (LEANING CLOSER TO JOSH): "Really? What do you know?"

JOSH: "I know who did it."

WILL (INTRIGUED): "Is the murderer here?"

JOSH: "Yes, in this club. But-"

(GRACE RUNS UP TO WILL AND PULLS HIM AWAY)

WILL: "Ms. Adler, I was just about to find out-"

GRACE: "Det. Truman, I made a mistake, Ben's alive, he just dumped me."

(GRACE BEGINS TO SOB AGAIN. WILL ROLLS HIS EYES)

WILL: "Not again." (PAUSES) "Wait a minute. If Ben's alive, then who was the pianist talking about?"

(ALL OF A SUDDEN, THE LIGHTS GO OUT. A WOMAN SCREAMS AND THE MUSIC STOPS.)

JACK: "Alright, nobody move! We're just having a brief power outage. If you stay calm, I'm sure the power will come back on in a moment."

(A FEW SECONDS PASS AND THEN THE LIGHTS COME BACK ON. EVERYONE IS CALM, UNTIL GRACE LOOKS AT THE PIANO, POINTS, AND SCREAMS. WILL CUPS HIS EAR IN PAIN, THEN LOOKS WHERE GRACE IS POINTING. WILL SCREAMS, TOO, LIKE A GIRL. JOSH IS LYING ON THE PIANO, A MEAT CLEAVER STICKING OUT OF HIS BACK.)

GRACE: "OH MY GOD, HE'S BEEN KILLED!"
