When I Play

When I play with blocks, I'm doing much more than it seems.
I'm planning and designing the creations in my dreams.
I'm sorting and classifying by shapes and sizes -
While working with others, and making compromises.

When palying with water, I do more than splash and get wet.
I'm learning to pour carefully- a skill you won't regret.
I'm learning about volume and why water wheels spin...
What happens to sponges when I squeeze and let go again.

When I play dolls, I'm learning about life.
What it takes to be a child, a good husband, a wife.
I'm working through my troubles by acting them out with friends.
I never feel threatened- after all it's just pretend.

When I play with friends, it helps me to grow.
I have to do it often- there's so much I need to know.
So when you see me playing, and think I'm wasting time
Please remember that I'm preparing for a future that will soon be mine.
