A Day In the Life of a Race Horse

Ever Wonder how Race Horses Live??? What drives them to Go????

Read On!!!

*YAAAAAWWWWNNN* {itch, itch, itch}.. IT can't be.. no.. what time is it??? 5:30 in the morning!!! Good grief, all you show horses got a EASY LIFE. No one wakes you up at 5:30am!
Not even a cup of Joe before I start my day. First thing First.. I need my morning Walk..It's very important to stretch those tired muscles after a long night.. I am very excitied to see my groom walking down the shedrow. Lisa is a great groom, she always knows what I hurt, and fixes me the best she can. I always reach down to sniff her hair when she is taking off my bandages.
{**SSSSSNNNNNIIIFFFFFFFF** Auhhhh smells like Apples}
She takes me out around the shedrow for a few turns so I can stretch, and talk to my friends on the other side of the barn. Then she will put me on the walking machine while she does my stall. I get to see what's going on, talk with all my friends, and walk off the nightly kinks.

when she is done, she will come fetch me, and put me in my stall so she can tack me up. 4 white polos, my saddle, my fleece padded martingale, and my favorite orange bridle. I always go out in my orange and blue colors so my trainer can see me way across the track.

Well my exercise boy comes around 7:00am, a quick leg-up and off I go to the track for my morning workout. Everyday it is different,, I may jog 2 miles, or go to the gate for a quick 2-minute lick..either way I love being out there! My ears are always perked, and my nostils blowing. My favorite times out there are when a group of us from the same barn are out there together. -YEP Me and my best buddies, we go out in a group, and race each other. We test just how good each other is. Sometimes we get so carried away our exercise boys have to stand straight up in their stirrups to slow us down.

When I come back from the track, first thing First.. A GOOD BATH!!! -Wooo boy do I get sweaty sometimes,, nothing feels better then a good drink of water, and a great bath. Sometimes I just get a quick shower and I have to walk until I cool down. I get SO ancy sometimes waiting for my bath.

Soon after my bath, I get my fly net put on, and I get walked until I'm ready for breakfast..{I'm always ready to eat!!!} I get put back in my stall after about 30 mins of walking.. I get my flake of hay, and my grain.. Ohhh Do I love my grain, I dive right into my bucket every morning. Toward the end of the morning, alittle before noon Lisa comes to my stall with her groom box. She brushes me off, combs my mane and tail, and sponges off my nose and face. Next she will get my bandages. She looks and feels over my legs to make sure I dont have any cuts or scrapes. Normally she will rub me down will a little alcohol, bigeoil, or vetrolin. {OOO does that tingle sometimes}. If I have any swelling in my legs Lisa will take good care of me. Sometimes she uses poultice, or sometimes she uses Furoszone. She wraps them in cotton, and then put my soft fluffy bandages on. She then picks my feet, and paints them with hoof oil. She throws me another flake of hay, and takes my halter off until feed time.

On the days I am told I get to race, life is a little different. If I go to the track that morning, it is only for a short jog. I get my bath, and put back in my stall. I eat earlier in the morning then the other horses. Lisa just rubs down my legs, she doesn't put my bandages on right away.

Mid-morning, the state vet will come to our barn. Lisa will take me out side and jog me up and down the shedrow until the vet is satisfied I am sound enough to race. I go back in my stall and wait until it is time to get ready. I watch Lisa wash and clean my bridled and halter. She also goes to the tack shop and gets my bandages that I race in. They are bright orange vet wraps, just like the color of my bridle. She also gets together the things she will need for me after the race. My flynet, my bandages, my brushes, and of course my dinner. If it's hot during the summer, she will place a fan infront of my stall so I don't get sweaty before the race. Sometimes I may have to wear iceboots, or stand in the ice-tub, or whirlpool boots before a race.. It feels REALLY REALLY Good.

She is alerted that it is almost time for my race by the P.A. system. She brushes me, combs me, trims me up, and puts my running bandages on. Then ofcourse my bridle, blinkers and halter.. I step out of my stall feeling like a Million BUCKS!! I get a quick hose down, and off we go to the paddock. Lots of people shout out "Good Luck!" on our way up there.. Lisa graciously says "Thank you" and I prance all the way up there.

Up in the paddock I get to see all the other horses I am racing against. I stand quietly in the stall while my trainer puts the saddle on my back, and talks to Lisa about how I am doing. They are both confident I will win. -Hey The program even picked me ontop to WIN! We wait for the jockey to arrive, and my trainer gives him final instructions - Of course I listen carefully too! which side to be on,, who to be in front of, who NOT to be in front of too early, and of course who might try and pass us close to the end. I hear the call "RIDERS UP!". My trainer gives the jockey a leg up and off we go to the track. ON our way down to the track, Lots of people call out to Lisa and my jockey to "Go Get Em!" - Ohh Boy YOU know we WILL!!

Well Long Story Short... WE WINNN!!!!!! YAAHHH!!!
After my race, we go to the test barn,, where I will get my shower, and walk for a little bit.. then I have to go in a stall to pee.. {How embarrassing I am telling you this.. } I have to pee, into a cup.. like at the doctors.. They test my pee to make sure my trainer isn't using anything illegal on me.
Such a strapping, handsome beast such as myself doesn't need chemical enhancement. I am fine the way I am!

Anyway.. after all is said and done.. I walk back to my barn,, I finally get the great suddsy bath I wanted almost a hour ago.. I get to go in my stall and eat my hay and grain { I love to EAT }
Lisa will wrap my legs up once again, brush me off, put my fan on. Then take my halter off and put me to bed. She shuts off my stall light, so I can have a good night sleep. I had a really good day, I won my race, and stayed out of all the mischief a race horse can get into..

Racing Is A Dirty Job... But somebody's gotta do It!!
