Martha Franklin, was the daughter of Isaiah Franklin, and Nancy Emert. Her
father and stepmother are buried at Pisgah Church cemetary, between Linville
Falls, and Altamont, N.C. off of highway 221. Her husband Jeremiah Oakes
died in the Cival War, and is buried at the National Cemetary, in Knoxville,

or where she died.Martha was a rugged woman, and it is rumored that she killed
a large bear with a pineknot, which she met on a trail, while climbing accross
a large pine log that was lying accross the trail. She pulled the knot from
the log, and mauled the bear to death. I have in my possession, a large
picture of her. After the death of Jeremiah, her husband, She never remarried,
however, she had three additional children, fathered by a Baptist preacher
by the name of Jasper Buchanan. Julia A. born 1869, a son (no name) born,
and died about 1871, and Mary D. born 1873.I have in my possession several
documents from the General Service Administration attesting to these facts.
She drew a small pension from the services of her husband in the Civil War,
which was discontinued the 5th of May, 1903 because of death. She named her
children, and gave the year of their births on her application for the
pension.
