I am not sure where William A. Oakes died. It is possible that he died at
Hampton,Carter County, Tenn. His 2nd wife died there, and she was living
with their son Harlon Washington Oakes, and the house was supposed to have
been the old William A. Oakes home..Both he and his second wife are buried
in the Franklin cemetary, in the White Pine Community, of Avery County,N.C.
two miles north of Crossnore, N.C. His first wife, Aleatha Victoria, and a
daughter Martha, are buried in the Drew Clark cemetary near Crossnore, N.C.

Martha FRANKLIN [Parents] was born 1837 in , Burke, N C. She died 5 May 1903 in Roan Mountain, Carter, Tennessee and was buried 7 May 1903 in Squirrel Creek, Avery, N C. Martha married Jeremiah OAKES on 14 Jul 1849 in , Yancey, North Carolina.

Martha Franklin, was the daughter of Isaiah Franklin, and Nancy Emert.Her
father and stepmother are buried at Pisgah Church cemetary,between Linville
Falls, and Altamont, N.C. off of highway 221. Her husband Jeremiah Oakes
died in the Cival War, and is buried at the National Cemetary, in Knoxville,
Tennessee. We have not determined as to where her mother Nancy is buried,
or where she died.Martha was a rugged woman,and it is rumored that she killed
a large bear with a pineknot,which she met on a trail,while climbing accross
a large pine log that was lying accross the trail. She pulled the knot from
the log, and mauled the bear to death. I have in my possession, a large
picture of her. After the death of Jeremiah,her husband, She never remarried,
however, she had three additional children, fathered by a Baptist preacher
by the name of Jasper Buchanan. Julia A. born 1869, a son (no name) born,
and died about 1871, and Mary D. born 1873.I have in my possession several
documents from the General Service Administration attesting to these facts.
She drew a small pension from the services of her husband in the Civil War,
which was discontinued the 5th of May, 1903 because of death.She named her
children, and gave the year of their births on her application for the
pension.

was from Ashe County, N.C. Larkin, was probably from Tennessee.

Jeremiah was killed at Cranberry, N.C. in 1911, He was hit over the head
with a blunt weapon,and knocked of a railroad trestle. Some people claim
that he was killed by his son, while others claim that he was killed by
a man by the name of Sluder, who later married Jeremiah's widow. This may
or it may not be true.

Mary Ann HUFFMAN, was born 1868 in , Mitchell, North Carolina. She married Jeremiah OAKES, on 1887.


Thomas MAYBERRY, was born Oct 1860 in , McDowell, North Carolina. He died 16 Nov 1939 in Banner Elk, Avery. Thomas married Nancy E. OAKES, on 1879/1880.

Personal interview with Mrs Columbus (Martha) Pritchard, of Canton, Ohio,
(now deceased). (Daughter).
The Census stated that he had been married 20 years,that they had had a
total of 9 children, and that only 7 were now living.
A Mira Carroway was in the household, and she was reported to being his
mother. she was born April, 1830.
A Willie E. Hester, born April,1880 was also in the household, He later
married the oldest daughter, Rhoda.
The birth year, and age of Nancy his wife, is in conflict with her mothers
statement on a pension application from her father Jeremiah Oaks Cival War
service.(See Jeremiah Oaks Chart).

Nancy E. OAKES, [Parents] was born 6 Oct 1859 in , Watauga, North Carolina. She married Thomas MAYBERRY, on 1879/1880.

Nancy E. Oakes, married Thomas Mayberry, and they lived in the Cranberry area
of Avery County. They are buried high upon the side of a mountain, near the
area they lived. They have many descendants in and around Cranberry, N.C.

death of Jeremiah Oakes. Her father was Jasper Buchanan, a Baptist preacher.

Julia married J.W. Pritchard, sometimes refered to as Philo Pritchard,18 Aug.

lists him as James H. Pritchard.
