Praslin Island
Praslin, the island of the original "Garden of Eden"
When Lazare Picault came ashore on Praslin in 1744, he was impressed by this unusual island paradise and the incredible luxuriance of its vegetation and gave it the name, Island of Palms. This island of only 17 square miles (44 square km) is what General Gordon, of Khartoum fame, declared as being the original Garden of Eden. The legendary coco-de-mer palm, with its unusual nut that resembles a woman's pelvis, only grows here in abundance in the Valle De Mai, a treasure that is also on UNESCO's list as a world heritage site.
