SITE DOWNTIME
It seems as though many of you have been checking the website over the past day or two, probably to check your teams and see how to go about your replacements. This has caused us to go over our hourly limit on bandwidth twice today and when that happens the site is taken offline for an hour. So if you do come across this, we apologise, and you should check back an hour later.

2ND ROUND REPLACEMENTS NEEDED BY 4PM SATURDAY!
As the group stage comes to an end, start thinking about those replacements for your fantasy team! We will need all replacements in by 4pm SATURDAY the 24th June.

Because of the amount of teams looking likely to be eliminated from our Seeding Group 4, we are allowing you to replace those Group 4 players with players still in the tournament from Group 3. All other replacements must be the same position and from the same seeding group your knocked-out player was in. You can also replace players whose country is still in the tournament if that player has been declared too injured to play any part in the rest of the tournament (see: Michael Owen).

Please get your replacements in to Mike or Gary Dawson in person, or to gary.dawson01@ntlworld.com.

FRANCE BREAK OUT OF GROUP G WITH THE SWISS
France and Switzerland both won 2-0 against Togo and South Korea, respectively, to send them through to the second round of the tournament.

France had several first-half attempts to go ahead against Togo but just couldn't take them, some bad shots mixed in with a few great saves from Kossi Agassa. The breakthrough came in the second half, Franck Ribery able to slide the ball into Patrick Vieira who turned and blasted the ball into the net. The lead was doubled 6 minutes later, the goalscorer Vieira turning provider as he headed the ball to Thierry Henry who finished with success. The result not only means that France advance to the second round as group runners-up for what should be a thrilling match against Spain, it also means that we will see Zinedine Zidane again. Zidane was suspended for the game against Togo and some feared his appearance against South Korea would be his last ever in a French shirt. The tie against Spain in the Round of 16 will be played on Tuesday (8pm kick-off) in Hanover.

In the other Group G game on Friday night Switzerland beat South Korea 2-0. Philippe Senderos was able to multi-task, making himself bleed while scoring the first goal as he headed home the ball and collided with a Korean head at the same time. Alexander Frei scored his second of the tournament to close out the match and the group, sending Switzerland through first and setting them up for a Round of 16 game against Ukraine on Monday (8pm kick-off).

SHEVCHENKO SEALS UKRAINE QUALIFICATION
The former AC Milan striker scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win over Tunisia while Spain topped the group with the same scoreline over Saudi Arabia.

Andriy Shevchenko was the only name on the scoresheet at the end of 90 minutes after converting a penalty kick in the 70th minute. Tunisia's Zied Jaziri was sent off in first-half stoppage time, the only talking point in a lacklustre first half display from both teams. The new Chelsea striker Shevchenko was brought down in the area and the captain himself took the penalty, sending his Ukraine side through to the second round on their World Cup debut. Anatoliy Tymoshuk was awarded with the man of the match. Ukraine will play the winners of Group G on Monday (kick-off 8pm) after finishing runners-up in Group H.

Juanito scored the only goal of the game in the other Group H game, giving his Spanish team a 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia. A fairly different Spain side were able to comfortably get the 3 points out of the game, giving them their third win of the tournament and 9 out of a possible 9 points from the group. The Spaniards qualify top of Group H and will therefore play the runners-up of Group G on Tuesday night (8pm kick-off) in the final Round of 16 match.

SOCCEROOS JOIN BRAZIL IN KNOCK-OUTS
The finale of Group F saw Brazil come from behind to beat Japan and Australia book their first ever second round place in the World Cup.

Group F culminated Thursday night, reigning world champions Brazil being the only team already through to the next round at the time of kick-off. The Croatians needed to beat Australia to stand a chance of qualification and it looked like it could be their night early on, Darijo Srna netting from a wonderful free-kick just 2 minutes into the match. The score stayed 1-0 until the 38th minute when Graham Poll awarded the Socceroos a penalty for handball. Craig Moore stepped up and confidently put it into the back of the net to level the scores going into half-time. Guus Hiddink's decision to replace Mark Schwarzer in goal looked to be a bad one, Zeljko Kalac nearly fumbled a cross into his own net and was then the reason for a second Croatian goal as he spilled what should have been an easy save from Niko Kovac's long-range effort across his goal line. Australia battled back and eventually grabbed a second equaliser, Harry Kewell scoring his first World Cup goal to tie the game at 2-2. Then things went a bit weird. Dario Simic's second yellow card in the 85th minute was shortly followed by Brett Emerton's second-bookable offense. Then Graham Poll showed a second yellow to Josip Simunic - who had already been booked. The English official didn't seem to notice it was Simunic's second yellow and the game continued with 10 on 10. Then deep into injury time the referee booked Simunic again, this time showing the red card for a third bookable offense. That was the last action of the game and Australia had secured a Round of 16 game with Italy with the point.

In Dortmund, Brazil took on Japan in their final group game. Japan took a surprise lead through Keiji Tamada but it was cancelled out by Ronaldo's first half stoppage-time header. Juninho then put the reigning champs in front with a shot which probably should have been saved by Kawaguchi. Six minutes later Gilberto doubled the advantage, latching onto Ronaldinho's superb pass and putting the ball beyond the 'keeper. Ronaldo scored again to seal the victory and to also join German legend Gerd Muller as the tournament's all-time leading scorer with 14 goals. The result sends Brazil through with 9 points, Japan joining Croatia in exiting the tournament. Brazil have locked up a Round of 16 tie with Ghana (Tuesday, 4pm) while other group qualifiers Australia will meet Italy on Monday (kick-off 4pm).

GHANA & ITALY ESCAPE GROUP E
In the closest group culmination so far, Italy and Ghana made it into the second round after victories over Czech Republic and USA, respectively.

Every Group E team had a chance of making the knock-out stages of the tournament at the start of today, but it was to be Ghana and Italy who would advance. Ghana, the first and possibly only African team to book a place in this year's round of 16 (the only other possible African nation to go through is Tunisia), beat USA 2-1 this afternoon. Michael Essien's 6th minute booking means the Chelsea player will miss the next game in the tournament, likely a second round clash with Brazil. Haminu Draman gave Ghana the lead on 22 minutes, dispossessing USA captain Claudio Reyna and finishing past Kasey Keller. The US brought themselves back into the match, though, DaMarcus Beasley intercepting a pass and playing a lovely ball across the box into Clint Dempsey's path, Dempsey rifling it into the back of the net. Before half-time the referee awarded Ghana a questionable penalty which Stephen Appiah had no trouble blasting into the roof of the net. The closing stages of the game saw several Ghana players go down with 'injuries' and 5 minutes of added time but the USA couldn't grab an equaliser or a winner which they would have needed to advance. Ghana qualify as Group E runners-up and will play the winner of Group F on Tuesday (4pm kick-off).

Italy finished out Group E with a 2-0 win over Czech Republic. Milan Baros returned from injury for the Czechs but he couldn't hold the fort on his own up front. Things didn't seem to go to well for the Italians to start with either, the Czechs started strong and Alessandro Nesta left the pitch with an injury, to be replaced by Marco Materazzi. Not even 9 minutes in, Materazzi put the Italians in front, heading in Francesco Totti's cross. Jan Polak was dismissed just before the half-time whistle for his second bookable offense. The Italians left it late but they did close out the game with a second goal, substitute Filippo Inzaghi beating the offside trap and taking it around Petr Cech for the simple finish. The result sends the Czechs, initial favourites with Italy to qualify, out of the tournament. Italy play Group F runners-up on Monday (kick-off 4pm).

GROUP C CONFIRMED AS EXPECTED
Tonight saw the culmination of Group C in the 2006 FIFA World Cup - Argentina and Holland battled to a goalless draw while Ivory Coast battled back to overcome Serbia & Montenegro 3-2.

A goalless draw in Frankfurt meant that Argentina finish top of Group C, Holland finishing runners-up. Both teams finished with 7 points, Argentina's 6-0 thrashing of Serbia & Montenegro lead them to first place via goal difference. The game saw both teams create chances, Argentina making the best ones with Lionel Messi often at the front of them. Neither team could slot a shot home though, Van Der Sar kept Holland in the game at 0-0 with a couple of good saves. Argentina's Carlos Tevez gained the man of the match award.
The result confirms what was already largely predicted, Argentina top Group C and will meet Mexico on Saturday (ko 8pm), Holland finished runners-up and will face Portugal on Sunday (ko 8pm).

Serbia & Montenegro threw away a 2-0 lead in the other group game, Ivory Coast battling back and winning 3-2. Zigic and Ilic had given Serbia & Montenegro a 2-0 lead after just 20 minutes. Dindane brought one back from the penalty spot before half time. Nadj was sent off for Serbia & Montenegro just before the half-time whistle. Dindane grabbed the equaliser as well, on 67 minutes. Kalou then converted a second penalty for a 3-2 Ivory Coast victory. Cyrille Domoraud was sent off for Ivory Coast in second half stoppage time following his second booking of the game. Serbia & Montenegro finished bottom of the group with 3 defeats, Ivory Coast finishing 3rd with 3 points.

PORTUGAL BEAT MEXICO, TOP GROUP D
Scolari left key players out of his Portugese side but they were still able to top Mexico, and Group D, grabbing a 2-1 victory.

Maniche put Portugal in front early on, smartly linking up with Simao and rocketing the ball past Sanchez. A handball from Mexican captain Rafael Marquez was cause for a penalty later on in the first half, Sanchez's devious tactics not putting off Simao who converted comfortably. Mexico brought themselves back into the game 5 minutes later, Jose Fonseca netting with his head from a Pardo corner. Mexico created plenty of chances in the second half but saw poor first touches and finishes fail to get them an equaliser. Miguel conceded a penalty but Omar Bravo wasted it, shooting horribly over from the spot. Another penalty claim went up from Mexico, but the referee decided against it, instead giving Luis Perez his second yellow card of the game. Mexico continued to push and Portugal never really threatened the 10-man side but the game stayed at 2-1.

Angola's failure to beat Iran meant they provided no threat on Mexico's second place and both teams leave the tournament winless after a 1-1 draw in Leipzig. Portugal play Group C Runners-Up on Sunday (ko 8pm), Mexico will meet the Group C Winners on Saturday (ko 8pm).

ENGLAND 2-2 SWEDEN, OWEN TEARS ACL
England's final group game of the 2006 World Cup ended in a 2-2 draw against Sweden. Injuries and a goal of the tournament candidate were the main talking points.

Michael Owen was stretchered away from the pitch after just one minute of game-time awkwardly injuring his right knee after a pass. He has since undergone a scan on the injury and the FA has confirmed he will not play any further part in the rest of the tournament after rupturing his ACL. England had several chances to score early on, Frank Lampard amongst them. The breakthrough came on 34 minutes, Joe Cole latching onto a clearance and chesting the ball before erupting with an unstoppable 35-yard volley. Sweden equalised 6 minutes after the restart, Marcus Allback getting his head to the ball from a corner kick, sending it into the net. Sweden continued to threaten from corners and things took a turn for the worse for England when Rio Ferdinand limped off to be replaced by Sol Campbell. Wayne Rooney clearly showed his frustration at being replaced by Steven Gerrard in the 69th minute, throwing off his boots and punching the dugout. Gerrard doubled his tournament tally, though, heading in a Joe Cole cross in the 85th minute. England couldn't hold on though and another set-piece created the Swedish equaliser. A throw in from Erik Edman found its way into the 6-yard box, Henrik Larsson seemingly getting the decisive touch (Olof Mellberg might yet be credited with the goal). The result does no change to the final table, England qualifying top to play Ecuador on Sunday (5pm), Sweden finished runners-up and will meet hosts Germany on Saturday (5pm).

The final Group B game of the tournament saw Trinidad & Tobago's spirited run come to an end as they fell 2-0 to Paraguay. A Sancho own goal and a Nelson Cuevas strike were the difference in sealing both teams' exits from the tournament.

GERMANS TOP GROUP A
Group A's games finished up this afternoon, Germany topping the group with a 3-0 victory over Ecuador.

Two goals from Miroslav Klose brought his tally up to 4 to put him top of the Golden Shoe race and Lukas Podolski ended his goal drought as well as sealing his country's third win of the tournament. Ecuador's decision to rest five key players may have been the difference in this game. Germany will play the Group B runners-up on Saturday while Ecuador will battle the winners of Group B on Sunday.

The other Group A game today saw Poland rescue some pride in picking up a 2-1 win over Costa Rica. Gomez put Costa Rica in the lead, but two goals from Bosacki gave Poland the three points and third position in the group, Costa Rica finishing bottom having lost all three games. Both teams are out of the tournament.
