March 1998: School Violence
The
actor playing Commissioner Gordon in the classic 1966 Batman series remarked, "What has the world
come to ?" when he heard that a woman was behind a crime spree in
Gotham City. I wonder what he would say when he hears about a recent event
in the state of Arkansas in the United States: Two boys, dressed in camouflage
suits, opened fire on their schoolmates, killing four girls and a teacher.
Personally,
I find this bit of news unbelievable. I really wonder what motivated the
two adolescents (an 11 and a 13 year old) to engage in a shooting spree:
Was it violence in television ? Was it their states' gun culture ? Was
it peer pressure ? Was it the stress generated by their personal problems
? I don't know. I really just don't know.
