February 1998: Mountain Climbing
When I watch people hiking up a mountain in a
television documentary, I can't help but feel as if hiking is an
easy activity. This is because the hikers in those documentaries
seem to enjoy every moment of their trek -- they even sing and
laugh while hiking. They seem not to feel any discomfort nor
encounter any difficulty during their trek. This perception is
obviously far from the truth.
Just
recently, my classmates and I hiked up a mountain; and yes, it was a tiring
and painful ordeal. The path we took to go up the mountain
was narrow, muddy and slippery causing many of us to loose our balance
and slip. Furthermore, some parts of the path were so steep that we needed
to hold onto a rope just to pass through. And as if those weren't enough,
the path was lined with horse and water buffalo waste matter that we must
avoid stepping on. I guess it's really true that one can never know how
challenging or difficult an activity is until one tries to do it.
