No, there are many projects that have nothing at all to do with typical rural living.
4-H offers a variety of project areas. Some projects that may be offered are:
4-H has a small yearly fee which covers insurance costs. Ours is $8.00, other areas may vary slightly. The only other costs you incur are project costs. Some projects such as Arts and Crafts may ask members to donate one or two dollars for the cost of supplies, others have no fees at all. There are some projects that can be expensive, such as the Large Animal project where you incur the cost of the animal, fee, possible veterinary care, etc. You do not have to purchase an animal to be in these projects. for example, you can be a "horse-less" member in the horse project. Many of the Large Animal project members make a profit at the end of the project form the sale of their animal. Small animal projects such as the Cavy Project, can be fairly inexpensive. A cavy can cost as little as $5 - $10, a rabbit only a little more. The upkeep on a small animal tends to be much less than the upkeep for a large animal. Cavies and other small animals (with some exceptions) do not have to be sold at the end of the project.
4-H does not have, or require an official uniform. Some fairs require that 4-H members wear a uniform to participate. The usual uniform consists of a hat (around $4), a white shirt, jeans (blue, black, or white), and a tie or scarf (around $12). Many 4-H clubs keep a supplies of clothes and uniforms that have been outgrown by other members that are free of charge. |
