·
5 blocks each of prints #5 and #6.
Cutting
and Piecing the block
Cutting
the Prints (Refer to Cutting Layout)
From each of the prints: #3, #4, #5,
and #6, cut one strip 7 3/4" wide by the width of the fabric.
From these
strips cut: 4 squares each of #3 and #4, and #5 squares of #5 and #6. Each square to
measure 73/4" x 73/4".
Cut these
squares diagonally into 4 triangles (a).
Use 2 of
these triangles for the 2 pieces "A" of the block (b).
The other 2
triangles will be cut again into the smaller triangle "C" needed for the shank
of the spool. With the ruler, measure 11/2" in from, and parallel to the longest edge
of the triangle, and cut (c). You now have 2 small triangles "C" and 2 polygon
(for scraps.)
Cutting
#2 solid coloured fabric (white) for 18 blocks
From the
light fabric #2 (white), cut 2 strips each 7 3/4" wide (see cutting layout).
From these
strips, cut 9 squares 7 3/4" x 7 3/4".
Cut these
squares diagonally into 4 triangles.
All these
triangles need to be cut again to obtain the "B" pieces. Measure and cut 2"
in from, and parallel to the longest edge (outside edge). The polygon pieces produced are
the "C" pieces.
Discard
small triangles.
Piecing
The Spool Block

·
Stitch all print triangles "C" to white "B" pieces. Press.
·
Stitch large triangles "A" to matching" B/C" pieces. Press.
·
Blocks are now ready to assemble: stitch the 2 halves of the block together,
matching the seams.
·
Press.
Assembling
the Rows
·
Assemble the completed blocks into 6 rows of 3 blocks each, 3 rows for
"side A", and 3 rows for "side B". Follow the suggested colour
placement.
Numbers refer to print colour number..
·
To cut sashing measure the length of the rows, they should be about 20",
if they are not, use your own measurement to cut the sashing. From the #1
(navy) fabric cut 4 sashing pieces 2 1/2" wide by 20" (or your own
measurement).
·
With right sides facing, stitch sashing pieces between the rows of blocks To
facilitate alignment of the rows, use a notch to mark the position of the seams. Press
seam toward the sashing

·
Measure across the top and the bottom of "side A" and "side B".
Use this
measurement to determine the length of the
top and bottom border pieces.
Using #1 solid colour (navy), cut 4 borders (2 for "side A" and 2 for side
B") 2 1/2" x approx. 24". Sew these borders to top and bottom of sides
"A
and "B".
·
Measure .the length of the sides of sides "A" and "B". Cut 4
borders to this length and 2 1/2" wide.
·
Sew to the sides of "side A" and "B".
Quilting
the Outershell
Cut 2 pieces
of lining and 2 pieces of batting, approx. 2" wider than the sides. Sandwich the
batting between the top and lining. Baste or safety pin in place. Machine or hand quilt.
Making
the Handles

Using solid
colour #1 (navy), cut three strips 3 1/2"x 42". Join the strips end to end to
form a long strip.
Using print
#6, cut three strips 1 l/2"x42". Join these strips to form a long strip.
Place solid
colour strip and print strip with right sides facing and raw edges even along the length
of the strip (a) and stitch. (Stagger the seams to reduce bulk.)
Place the 2
remaining long edges with right sides facing, raw edges even, stitch (b). Turn.
Press tube
fiat, making sure that the border is even on both sides of the centre print. Cut the long
tube in half so that you have 1 handle for "side A" and 1 for "side
B".
Place one
handle over the sashing on "side A". Stitch it down through all thicknesses, in
the ditch along the print. Sew only up to the lower edge of the top border (c). Leave
about 15" at the top for the handles.
