Peebles and Traquair House June 13, 2000
From Gretna Green, we drove through the Borders region to Peebles. The town is a lovely riverside village with easy bus and road access to the Edinburgh, about 20 miles away. We stayed at the Lindores Bed and Breakfast. Proving it is a small world, the owners actually lived in the Washington area in years past.
We spent the afternoon at Traquair House which is nearby in Innerleithen.

Traquair was built prior to 1107 and is considered the oldest continuously occupied house in Scotland. The main gates, called the Bear Gates, were locked in 1745 by the Earl of Traquair after Prince Charles Edward Stuart left the house. The Earl the promised that they would not be reopened until the Stuarts were restored to the throne. They are still locked. Traquair has a working brewery run by the Earl and makes several excellent beers including "Jacobite Ale" which is available in the U.S. |
