Aberdeen Highland Games
June 18, 2000
We drove from Lumphanan toward Aberdeen desperately in search of a gas station. We tried the local station in near Lumphanan the night before, but arrived three minutes after it closed. Fortunately, we found a station on the way into Aberdeen and filled up, total cost for a tank: $66.10. The cost of gas in Scotland made the $1.55 per gallon price at home seem cheap.
In Aberdeen we went to the Highland Games. The games were great fun, they had bands, pipers, Highland dancing, and "heavy" events including the caber toss. One of the contestants was a walk-on from Germany (Anyone in Highland garb can enter up to one hour before the heavy events start.) The German was not quite as good as the Scots, but he gave each event a good try.
