It is also site of the Scotland's most notorious massacres. On February 13, 1692, the Campbells of Glenlyon murdered over 40 MacDonalds on the orders of the government of William III. The act was especially shocking because the MacDonalds had hospitably allowed the Campbells to stay in their homes for 10 day before the attack.
