Shawondasee & the Golden Girl
In the summer, Shawondasee, the south wind, grew heavy, drowsy, lazy. He liked to lie in the shade of live oaks and magnolias, inhaling deeply the odor of the blossoms and filling his lungs so full that when he exhaled, his breath carried with it a delicate perfume.
One day Shawondasee gazed over his fields with a sleepy eye and saw at a distance a slender girl with yellow hair. He admired her and wanted to call her to his side, but he felt too lazy.
Next morning he looked again, and she was still there, more beautiful than ever. Every day he looked, and held his breath for a few moments, until he saw the girl in the warm green prairie grass.
One morning, as Shaawondasee awoke and glanced over the fields, he rubbed his eyes.
His golden girl was gone! Instead, an old woman stood there, with head of gray.
"My brother, the north wind, has been here and put his cruel hand on her head!" cried Shawondasee
He gave such a mighty sigh that hte old woman's hair fell from her head and she was gone.
