In the middle of a large forest,by a nameless little lake lived two children. Because the children's parents were killed while they were very young, they were left to fend for themselves. The boy, who was younger, learned to shoot a bow quite well. And would most often return from hunting with game, which his sister would cook for thier dinner.
As the boy grew older, he felt a need for a companion other than his sister. On his many hunting trips, he thought about life outside the confines of the forest. He wished to hear other voices but those of himself and his sister and the animals of the forest.
"Are we the only people in the world?" he would wonder aloud.
"I am not sure," his sister would say. She was so occupied with daily chores that she didn't realize the ideas her brother was entertaining.
One evening after returing from a hunting trip, her brother seemed to be in a fractious mood. When questioned by his sister, he replied:
"Make me several pairs of moccasins, I am going to explore past the forest."
His sister, although greatly distressed by this statement, made the moccasins as he requested.
At dawn the next morning, the young man Otter, started out of the forest. He came to a valley soon afterward and discovered some rotten and old tree stumps.
"It's been quite a long time since this place was occupied." he thought to himself.
So he could find his way back, he marked the places he came upon with the pairs of moccasins. As he continued his journey, he came upon more and more signs of life. Until finally he found a small village filled with people. With an excited heart and hesitant step, he approached the village.
