My
name is
Donald D. Lewis. I was born with Cerebral Palsy
(C.P.), and
have been
confined to a
wheelchair all my life! I am 50 yrs. old, so I've seen alot come and
go, as far as the disabled go. I guess I've always been a kind of
'rebel', as I have gone against the 'system' since day One! I acquired
the nickname "Wolf", when I was 10, not knowing that destiny had set
it's course! "Against All Odds", I battled through high school, made it into college, took studies in Bio-Medical Genetics, but had to settle on a degree in Business Administration! After graduation, people were too ignorant to hire me anywhere, so I turned back to my first love---- dogs. Problem was, none of the breeds satisfied my inner-self! |
About
this time , I
married, we had a child, and I thought my life was
looking good! Well, I couldn't have been more wrong! Two years later, I
was alone, my wife had left me, taking my son with her! I was
devastated!! |
About a year later, in 1983, my life took the ultimate turn, in the tiny form of a tiny ball of fur! This ball of fur soon grew into my first of many, as he was a beautiful wolf hybrid (75%), named "Warlock"! |
Well, one thing led to another,...and another,...and another...and...! Here I was, in wheelchair, raising wolves & wolf hybrids! I WAS IN HEAVEN! I was the 'alpha' of my own pack! There was: WARLOCK, HEXE, GYPSY, SHAMAN, PHANTOM, HEATHEN, NIGHTMARE, LOKI, KIANA, KEISHA, HULETTE, HUA, TASHA, ANA, AND KODI! |
I had the usual 'wolf problems' (people), and lost a few to gunshots, poisonings, and kidnappings, and through it all I still found strength in my losses! Those that were to grieve with me, we howled our mournful cries together!! |
Then in 1993, I suffered an accident in which I sustained a fractured neck! The doctors gave me very little chance of survival, let alone recover! Well, my friends and family lined my hospital room with pictures of my 'babies' and that's all it took! I drew my inner-strength from those golden eyes, and am happy to report that I have almost fully recovered! The doctors cannot explain it! |
While on the mend, my family has been caring for my two remaining children, KEISHA & KODI, and we all will be united soon! |
Keisha (75%) and Kodi (87%) are
doing fine! I worried about Kodi , while I was in the hospital, as he
was just 6 months old when I went in! I didn't see him 'til 11 months
later (Jan.-Nov.,'93), and he has isolated himself to the point where
he was actually dying of loneliness and heart-break!!! They (my family)
begged me to have him put down, saying it was the 'right' thing to do!!
The hospital was due to let me go home for the holiday, and I
persuaded them to wait two more weeks, until I got there! |
I had my dad push my wheelchair through six inches of snow to where Kodi was 'holed' up in his doghouse.... My dad told me not to expect much, and I told him to back away. My heart was racing....Would he remember...? "Kodi!" I called, "Kodi, come to Daddy!" | ![]() Donald and Kodi's reunion November, 1993 |
The next thing I knew, I was being smothered with 'wolf kisses', coming from 135 lbs. 'LAP-DOG'!!! We spent the next three hours, in the snow, he and Keisha and I, ONE with each other!! He let my whole family into the 'pack', now that his ALPHA had returned!!! |
Now, every few months, I go down to be with them, each time greeted by the HALLELUJAH CHORUS, I bring them venison and other 'kills', and it's such a good time! They make no fuss when I leave, knowing that I WILL return from another long hunt'! |

Kisses all around, this photo is of Keisha (on left), and Kodi (on right). Bred and "owned by Donald D. Lewis, these two beautiful Wolfdogs are actually mother and son. |
Kodi
teases. "Come here, Red Riding Hood... This very expressive Wolfdog was born 6/24/92, the son of dam "Keisha" and sire "Huey" (also owned" by Donald). Kodi is shown here at 2 years of age, F1 87.5%. For the last 13 years, Kodi has been the reigning "Alpha" , here at Wolfhaugen Kennels. |

A sunny, relaxing day
with Keisha. She was a mid- content F1 75% Wolfdog. In May of 2003 Keisha crossed over the Rainbow Bridge, at the ripe age of 12 years old. She will be dearly missed. |
She seems to be saying "hey man, I'm just hangin' out waiting for a cat to cross my path". Keisha seems quite the cool-cat herself! |
