A Message from the
Executive Director

According to Jewish folklore she was Adam’s first wife. Eve was Adam’s second wife. Legend has it that having a mind of her own, Lilith disagreed with Adam about many things. The greatest of these was her refusal to lie beneath him during copulation, believing that -- both of them having been created from earth -- were equal. Lilith uttered the ineffable name of God, rose up into the air of the world, and, from then on, took shelter in a cave by the Red Sea. Today, Lilith is noted for her legendary defiance against her partner, Adam. She rejected women’s subordination by man.
