Network (RHAN) to re-register levonorgestrel 750 mcg (Postinor).(MS Word)
|
Background
In 1999, the Department of Health approved the registration of a drug called Postinor as an Emergency Contraceptive. The drug, also known as Levonorgestrel 750 mcg is in fact the same stuff of regular oral contraceptives containing Levonorgestrel (LNG) which primarily works to inhibit and delay ovulation. Emergency Contraception is also known as the "morning after pill" and is commonly mistaken by many to be the abortifacient "RU 486 (mifepristone)" because of the misinformation by anti-choice advocates. But LNG is in fact a different drug, having already existed for over 40 years. The regular combined oral contraceptives can in fact be used as ECP in combined higher, doses. The only difference of ECP is that it is used as a regimen after intercourse to prevent pregnancy. It is also a dedicated pill and contains LNG in higher doses. It is a regular back-up for most birth control methods which can fail (such as condom breakage, missing two or more regular pills etc.), as well as taken in cases of sexual assault or rape. ECP's proven mechanism of action is to prevent pregnancy within 72 hours (most effective) up to 120 hours after unprotected intercourse.
