Egwene al’Vere

Egwene al’Vere was born and raised in Emond’s Field.  The daughter of the innkeeper, since childhood she had been virtually promised to marry Rand al’Thor.  But a Trolloc attack on Winternight changed all that, and she fled Emond’s Field.

On the journey away from Emond’s Field, Moiraine Damodred informed Egwene that she was able to channel the One Power.  In fact,

Egwene had a great deal of potential.  In the Tower, only Nynaeve al’Meara could hold as much of the Power as Egwene.  Egwene’s learning was characterized by a great deal of skill and aptitude, but no fear.  Some of her teachers believed this lack of fear to be a dangerous thing.

Egwene’s adventures were varied, but eventually she did make it to Tar Valon to begin her training.  Here she became close friends with Elayne Trakand, the Daughter-Heir of Andor.  It was also in Tar Valon that she met, and fell in love with, Elayne’s brother Gawyn.

While in service to the Amyrlin Seat, Siuan Sanche, Egwene was captured by the Seanchan and leashed with an a’dam .  She was treated as an animal, and forced to wield the One Power against her wishes.  After her rescue, she vowed never to be leashed again.  Some good came of this experience, though, as she was pushed very hard in her training as a damane.  She returned to the Tower with a great deal more skill.

Egwene has another skill rare among Aes Sedai - that of Dreaming.  Dreamers can enter Tel’aran’rhiod without the aid of a ter’angreal.  Egwene’s dreams often seem to have some sort of relevance to the future, but she had virtually no guidance as she sought to develop this Talent.

It was the Aiel Wise Ones who eventually proved able to teach the art of Dreamwalking to Egwene.  The ability to Dream is shared by many Wise Ones, and they took Egwene on as a pupil.

When the Tower split, Egwene sided with the rebels who fled to Salidar.  It was in Salidar that Egwene, along with Elayne and Nynaeve, began to force information from the captured Moghedien .  Egwene was marveled over, as she “discovered” how to do things with the One Power which had been forgotten since the Age of Legends.

Egwene was raised as Amyrlin Seat by the rebels in Salidar, and presented to the world as the true Amyrlin.  Some of the Aes Sedai had obviously believed she would serve as a puppet, easy to control.  She quickly proved them wrong, though, and was soon moving the Tower in the direction she thought best.  Under her leadership, the Tower in Salidar has raised an army and declared war on Elaida a’Roihan.

Egwene, as the Amyrlin Seat of the White Tower in Salidar, is one of the most powerful women in the world.  Her decisions and actions play an important role in the present battle between the Light and the Shadow.
