Safety and Precautions

Gwalior is very safe for tourists. When you go out of hotel, please ensure that if your bag has zipper, it is locked. If you have got valuables like camera, money etc., you may deposit that at safe deposit provided by most of the hotels. It is not mandatory to give keys to reception, when you go out.

Though there has not been any major incident of crime against tourists in Gwalior, still it is recommended that tourist should not roam alone after 10.30 p.m. specially ladies. Please be careful about AIDS because India has high rate of infections of AIDS. Insist on use of new blade, if you plan to get shaved here.

Health
You may like to have injections of Hepatitis A and B. It is not safe to drink tap water. Always carry a bottle of mineral water, price of which has been given on Expense Guide Page. Mosquitoes are common in summer. It is advisable to carry mosquito repellant creams. Malaria tablets (Lariago etc.) could also be useful. In case of dehydration people use energizers like Glucon - D and Electral.

In case of general illness you may call one of the recognized doctors given below. Consultation fee of a good doctor is normally Rs.100-150 . District government hospital (J.A. Hospital) fee is Rs. 5 but facilities are limited.

Medications
Visitors need to produce doctor's prescription to get medicines from medical shops. Please ensure you always get a receipt of your purchased medicines and check expiry dates given on them. The medical shop at the J.A. Hospital is open 24 HRS.


Women Hygiene
Tampons are unavailable. Sanitary napkins are available in general stores, super markets, medical shops etc. Popular brand is Whisper (Costs about Rs. 50-60 for a pack of ten). Painkillers are widely available on medical shops.

Business hours
Most of the monuments and offices remain open from 10.30 am - 5 pm, on weekdays. Fort remains closed on Friday.

Shopping: 10.30 am to 9 pm Mon-Sun.
Downtown, Bada, remains closed on Tuesday.

Post offices
Most of the post offices are open 10.30 am to 3 pm on weekdays. Speed post is the fastest service available in Indian postal system. Speed post normally reaches in maximum 2 days in case of inland places and 4 days in case of foreign destinations.

Telegram can be sent from Central Telecom Office called "Tar Ghar" in Jayendra ganj . The telecom center has all telecom facilities including video conferencing and fax from 7 - 24 HRS on weekdays and from 8 - 16 HRS on Sundays and holidays.

Telephones
Online Gwalior phone directory is available at BSNL site. Telephone booths called "STD ISD PCO" have wide presence. All booths have signboards of yellow color with black text written on them.   i.e.

Television
Most of the hotels provide television sets with cable connection.
International channels like BBC, CNBC, CNN, ESPN, MTV, HBO, Hallmark, AXN, Discovery, Kermit and Carton Network, are also available.

Conventions
Though tipping is not a general custom except in some hotels, 10% of the bill may be given as tip. Taxi drivers and porters are not tipped.

Special ticket window for tourists exists in reservation office of Railways. Queuing should be followed everywhere.

What to wear
As the summers are really hot so light cotton cloths are preferable. Bermudas and T-shirts would be good for city roaming.

Winters are cold with pleasant afternoons and cold nights. Jeans, pullovers and other woolen clothing is recommended.

Sandals are most common footwear. A hat and Sunglasses are also recommended.
