Madaba
Madaba lies 33Kms to the
south of Amman. It is one of the very ancient
cities in Jordan. It is first mentioned in Misha
Stone, the Moabite King, where he illustrated
the liberation of his country. This reflects an
advanced civilization and culture. On this Stele
many other Jordanian cities were mentioned. It
was found in the Jordanian village Theeban in
A.D. 1868.
In
the Roman period Madaba was a great town and
remains of an ancient church dated to the fifth
or sixth century A.D. were discovered in it.
It contains a mosaic map of Palestine and its
surroundings.
Um
Er-Rsas
It lies 21Kms from Madaba.
Remains of a church were currently discovered
containing mosaic floors. Um Er-Rsas is famous
for its ancient tower.

Mount
Nebo " The Memorial of Moses "
Mount Nebo lies at 10Km
to the north-west of Madaba. Nebo is a Semitic
word which means " Height ". It is 800m high
overlooking the Dead Sea.
On
the top of this mount which is called " Siyagha
" there are the main ruins of a church and a
monastery. Their walls and floors are decorated
by mosaic. It is mentioned that the Prophet
Moses was burried on this mount.
Al-Mukhayyat
It is a Byzantine church
built in the sixth century A.D. It is near Mount
Nebo. Its floors are of mosaic.
Hammamat
Ma’in
Hammamat Ma’in lies at
35Km west of Madaba. It is famous for its sulfurous
mineral water springs of high concentration.
Herod the great (73 - 4 B.C.) visited it to
regain health.
