The Team |
The WHR team consists of a shanker, a mugger, a rider and of course a wild horse. The object of the race is to saddle, mount and ride the horse to the designated finish within the time limit (usually two minutes-depending on the distance of the track). |
The SHANKER gets the horse under control by rope. The MUGGER keeps control by wrapping his arms around the horse's head and shoulders. The RIDER saddles, mounts and rides the horse to the finish. |
The HORSES that are used in wild horse racing are provided by stock contractors who own, breed and raise these beautiful animals on private lands. The horses who have not been "trained to the saddle" are never-the-less well maintained from their food source to veterinarian services. The spirited top-notched horses weigh upwards from 1,000 pounds and have little to fear from beast or man. After participating in rodeos, many of the horses are kept for breeding; others are trained to be used in horse-related events and some are sold. None of the horses are abused, neglected or used for slaughtering purposes. This is a profession. For more information see Animal Welfare |
The horses used in wild horse racing are from privately owned stock and are not a part of the Bureau of Land Management's wild horses who are protected by law. |
